Tonight I’m working on making some little DVDs for my preschoolers, and it takes about eleven minutes to burn each one to a disk. I’m trying to use my time wisely – doing a few dishes, putting away papers, and… coloring my hair.
I’m using henna powder. Years and years ago I used to put henna on my hair. I’d buy it at this crazy Egyptian store in Lincoln for five bucks. The boxes were hilarious, and I regret not saving one. It had your standard bad-English-translations, but I can’t remember any of them. Today I bought some at the treehugger store. They sold it by weight, so I just got a couple of scoopfuls. You mix it with hot water, put the whole sloppy mess on your head and then wait. I’m scared, because I didn’t do a strand test first. Who has time for a strand test? I did manage to burn my scalp a little, because I was too impatient. Anyway, I took a ‘before’ picture, but I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to post and ‘after’. It’s still sitting on my head, wrapped in a shower cap. Betcha wish you could see that, huh?
Update: It’s done, and I look exactly the same. *sigh*

Henna is very popular in Colombia. My sister-in-law used to do regular henna treatments. It pretty much just turned her gray hairs reddish for maybe 6 weeks. She used to say that you couldn’t use henna if you had been dying your hair. She kept a set of plastic gloves just for the henna. Let me know if you want any more tips, and I’ll send her to the blog.
I’m sure you look fabulous, Lauren!

Maybe you were supposed to eat the henna. Was this a treehugger grocery store? If so, I rest my case. If not, give me a minute… I’ll come up with another theory.

Exactly what were you trying to achieve? On my computer the concoction looks green, so I would think you’d be glad it didn’t work … unless maybe you’re going for a grunge look …

The alternative options for using kitchen utensils is endless. It wasn’t too long ago Lloyd used a pancake flipper to clean gutters……remind me to watch how you measure parts for my hot toddies!

Don’t perm your hair after using henna of ANY kind, -- even if you wait several weeks. My friend did that, and it fried her hair and much of it fell out or broke off.
