Happy 33 1/3, Beth!

Journal, Lauren

Brad and I are giving this event full coverage, so I hope our stories don’t overlap too much.

Yesterday Beth turned a third of a century old.  She had mentioned long ago that she would like a party to celebrate the occasion.  We said ‘yes’, then never mentioned it again – keeping it a secret.  I was feeling kind of bad not saying anything because she seemed sad all day (we didn’t even say ‘Happy 33 1/3’ to her.)  She didn’t know that behind the scenes was a flurry of e-mails, phone calls and party assembling.  And, come 5:20 when we brought in all the stuff, she was good and surprised!  Thanks to all who attended or sent presents long-distance!  Here’s a photo montage of the event.
People were invited to bring a third of something – the sadder the better. Third of a candle, third of a soda, etc. The gifts were splendid!

A family from Tara’s play group came, and Tara and Martin had a grand old time racing their vehicles around the table. They wore themselves out!
Go, Speed Racer!
Go, other Speed Racer!
We all wore nametags that told who we were, how we knew Beth, and something that we knew about her. It was very informative!
Such happy guests!
See those tags? What could they be?
(At the end of the night, Tara confiscated all the name tags. She was very lovely.)
It created wind resistance.
The gift opening was a hoot!
A third of a fundraiser candle. Now that's love.
We had cake and snacks, and sang “Happy Birthday to you”, but not the whole song – just a third of it.
Blow out the thirds!
May the second third of your century be as happy, Beth!

Heh. Check out my dad’s “candy cane” in the fourth picture. Lauren made it for him.

What a great party! Happy Birthday Beth! I think you Nebraskaians should have flown out the Baltimore crew for the event … or at least one-third of us!

Happy 33 1/3 birthday, Beth! I’m sorry I missed out on the celebration. 🙁 I could have flown to Lexington, KY in honor of your day. All the way to NE would have been too far. Brad cheated.
