We went to see Lloyd’s school’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and let me just say – it was awesome! Those kids did an amazing job, and it was chock full of Royuks! Rachel was in the chorus, and Brent was in the orchestra. It was great. I took a couple of pictures of the cast afterwards, but of course they all turned out blurry. Let me instead take you on a walk down memory lane.
The spring that Lloyd and I were engaged, Concordia put on this same musical. Many of our friends were involved in the production, but not us. I envisioned of the two of us snuggling together and planning a wedding while others rehearsed (insert barfing sounds here)….. then it turned out that they needed another tenor so they drafted Lloyd.
Colors faded into darkness, I was left alone.
Here are some photos of the involved persons. This is Kathryn, my super-talented operatic roommate who was the Narrator:
Lloyd (playing Gad) is sitting down and to the right, with the puppy-dog, wobegone eyes. Those Canaan days, where did they go?
And this is the only shot of Brad. I couldn’t find him in the group shot, but look under Joseph’s arm (his right) – I’d recognize that forehead anywhere.
I got a lot of homework done that spring.
Brad says
What? No video clips from our performance? You have a tape, don’t you?
And as I recall, I received many glowing reviews about the performance of my forehead in that production:
“Naphtali’s forehead was the star of the show” -Weekly World News
“I have seen perfection. It is Naphtali’s forehead.” -The Inquirer
Lauren's dad says
If I’m not mistaken, we still have the vinyl record here at home. It couldn’t be as exciting though as Lincoln Lutheran High’s performance.
Deborah says
I was the show’s greatest fan. All of my friends and relatives were in it also. My roommate, my brother-in-law, my friends. I was a year behind Lauren, so she was way too cool for me to hang out with. Otherwise we could have kept each other company.
Lloyd says
Yeah, when did you get cooler than Lauren? Because I do remember a time when you weren’t. Then, all of a sudden, you were. Strange.
Annette says
I’ll say
Lauren says
Deborah was always cooler than me, she just didn’t realize it. Once she caught on, though, all was lost for me.
Deborah says
Oh, go on.
Charles says
Ah-hem!
Lauren says
C’mon, Charles, you know you’re way cooler than Lloyd, too. You Gebhardts have us beat -- hands down.
Peggy says
I was a star in a play once … I was the “sunny sun flower plucked from Amy’s garden just today” in Tom Sawyer. Hand chosen for my dancing, singing, & overall cuteness factors. (My singing was still considered “cute” then) … but then the rejections started in 3rd grade & I was a has been by 5th.
Lauren says
I, too, had my debut in a Tom Sawyer play! My line was, “I’ve never been on a riverboat before, have you?” Can you hear the sincerity in my voice? All those other second graders could feel my lack of riverboat savvy -- I was that convincing.
Kristi says
I love, love, love that show!!! I got to be the rehearsal accompanist for 1 day. Does that count? And are you sure that’s Lloyd sitting down in that chair? It looks more like John Schmid to me.
Karla says
I agree -- that does look like John.
I think I did spotlight for that production, but I don’t quite remember. There’s an entire semester that I’ve forgotten (or repressed). I got my hands on a copy of my transcript once and thought -- Wow! I took those classes? How did I forget taking Chemistry?
Beth says
And your memory loss was due to what???
Karla says
I wish I knew -- but I don’t remember… I sure hope it was something good!
