Move along, Sam. This post won’t interest you at all – it’s part of my memory archives.
It’s been nagging at me for quite a while how many bottles and tubes of junk I have in my bathroom cupboard. I think it was the hairspray post that made me think that maybe it was time to do something about it. For the past few weeks I’ve been trying to whittle away at all those extra things and use them up, and I thought about taking a picture of them all before I started. I really wish I had, because here is a mid-way picture, and it’s so embarrassing. Tiny half-empty bottles of shampoo that I can’t bear to leave at hotels because they’ll just throw them away; little samples of lotion and conditioner, ‘miracle’ lotions that I tried a few times and stopped using; many, many kinds of hairspray; and TWO kinds of nail polish remover. I don’t even paint my nails! The truly awful part is this isn’t even all of it. I have a stash of large-bottle shampoos and I didn’t show all the stuff that I use on a daily basis, or the stuff in my travel bag. Or the teacher-gift lotions/bath stuff in the downstairs bathroom! (I clean the toilets with the shower gel, though, so at least that gets used up.) Arrrgh!!!
Some eco-freak I turned out to be. This is ridiculous.

If any of that is unused, like little hotel soaps and shampoos, they’re usually welcomed by women’s shelters.
I was able to throw out a whole bunch of toiletry odds and ends like that when I moved. Finally had to admit that something that had been sitting in a bathroom drawer unused for five years likely wasn’t ever going to be used.

You could use up that whole bottle of Vaseline by putting it in your cats’ fur and giving them crazy hairstyles. It would be great fun for you and them, and you’d have one less bottle.
Beth says
And I imagine at least two posts! Double bonus!
Beth says
Is that a tiny can of aerosol hairspray? I’ll take that! I need one of those for our crazy 10th anniversary trip to Chicago to have pizza. Have I told you about that?
Beth says
And, EtCetera will take all that stuff. Even half used.
Annette says
It’s a Jekyll/Hyde thing…. Eco-freak/Tiny plastic compact cute packaging addict
Annette says
Oh and by the way--none of it relates to the Luau theme in the slightest!
Peggy says
Maybe you could just leave all those things on the towel & leave your door open. Some kind friend will stop by (cough-Beth-cough) & take care of it for you….kind of like when someone has to take a pet to be put to sleep because you just can’t bare to do it yourself.
Beth says
Heh. I’ve been known to sneak into people’s houses and do stuff… 😉
Lauren says
No, this is a personal mission. I will use up all this stuff, and it will be interesting to see how long it takes me.
Beth, you can sneak in and have the cats put to sleep. 😉

If the Hydrogen Peroxide is old, it probably isn’t even any good any more. That stuff has a very short shelf life and then decomposes into water. Then you can pour it down the drain with no guilt and toss the bottle into your recycling bin.
This has been your educational chemistry tidbit of the day.
Curt says
Can you drink it after that point?
Lauren says
or pour it on your cereal?
Karla says
Or heat it up and put a tea bag in it?
CousinSam says
Are all of these really cool things super miniature or gigantic? Quarter please for size. Is that a face towel they’re on?
Lauren says
Gigantic. That’s a yard tarp. Can’t you see me by the deodorant?

Your blog is so funny, you make me giggle uncontrollably late at night and wake up the whole house! Did you know you can use old shampoo to clean the shower with?? WHILE you shower in the shower scrubbing the shower! Genius!
