When they took out the basketball hoop, the tree trimmers took away the concrete, but couldn’t take the rest of the pole away. We tried setting it out with the trash, but apparently they only take things less than 4 feet long or some such nonsense. I detached the hoop-y part and set it out by the street for someone to take, and had an absolutely genius idea for separating the two pieces so they could go in the trash can. Spray the joint down with silicone spray, cool down the inner part with ice, then heat up the outside with boiling water. Grip, pull, done.
Um, no. It is super stuck. Granted, it was Lloyd pulling on it and me pulling on it, which is as effective as a normal person and a noodle working together, so that may have been the problem.
Lloyd tried bashing it with a hammer next, but I think he may just be working through some noodle-related frustrations.
I have solved the problem by hiding the pole under a row of bushes. Good enough.
Lauren's dad says
Set it out along the curb and put a $50 For Sale sign on it. Surely someone will steal it!
Beth says
HA!
Peggy says
I second that HA!!!! That is genious!
Brad says
Sounds like it’s time to try something dangerous! How about a crazy-scary power tool?
christina says
If you try the circular saw, be carefull of the cords, they are sneeky!

Rae says
Who’s there?
Peggy says
Goliath
Lauren says
Goliath who?
Peggy says
Goliath down, you two must be so tired!
Deanne says
The dump? Doesn’t Brad like that sort of thing?
Michele says
“A normal person and a noodle” -- ha! I laughed out loud!
Deborah says
A science question for you: Why would you heat up the outside? Wouldn’t that make it expand and therefore be more difficult to separate? Maybe I’m not understanding.
Lauren says
Same reason you run a jar lid under hot water -- it expands out, away from the neck of the jar. (In theory.)
Deborah says
OK
Curt says
Hey I’ll take the backboard and rim if you don’t have a use for it.
Lauren says
Done!
Curt says
How bad do you beat up that pole?
