I came home tonight to a box on the front steps. Woo-hoo! (That’s always exciting, until I realize it’s boring technical stuff that Lloyd has ordered for school.)
This box, though, this box had handwriting. Sellers of technical stuff don’t have handwriting, so this was a positive sign. It took me a minute to realize it was Brad’s handwriting.
Stuff from Brad!! Hooray!! It’s gotta be good! I wonder what it could be??? It’s heavy. What could it possibly be??? It’s….it’s…….
Oh. It’s books.
Booooooooo. Books are boring. Worse yet, they were books for Lloyd. groan.
….and then, peeking from beneath the books – an umbrella!! And a note!!
The note says:
FOR LAUREN: This is the umbrella from Brookstone that I was talking about. It folds up small, but opens up HUGE. It’s my gift to you. All I ask in return is that it’s available to me next time you aren’t in Seward on the Fourth of July and it’s cold and raining and Denis is there and if there’s not some cool ‘hover umbrella’ from the future later.
(This Fourth of July when Brad and Denis were here it was cold and raining and the only umbrellas we had in the house were worthless.)
The rest of the note had some ‘blah blah blah’ to Lloyd about the books. Brad says that one of them is signed by its author (Robert Jordan) but you forget, Brad, that I know your handwriting.
Brad says
Haha! That’s not my handwriting. I take my packages to one of those mailing places because they package things for you. When I left, the woman hadn’t boxed the stuff yet because she was eating lunch. Usually they print a label. She send the box by “media mail” this time. Maybe that’s why it’s hand-written.
Lauren says
Are you joking me? In my mind this looks like all those fish cards from college. Then again, I have a terrible memory.
(Then again again, you could be pulling my leg so you can continue to autograph Robert Jordan books….)
Beth says
I can vouch for him. It is most definitely NOT his handwriting. Too many swoopies.
Curt says
Beth, you should have posted your comment at 5:55am to keep the pattern going.
Curt says
Opps. I forgot this site is somewhere in the mountains. 6:55am cst.
Kristi says
Can we see the umbrella opened in all its fullness? A quarter will be necessary for size.
Peggy says
HA! I was thinking the very exact thing! Let’s see it open! Let’s see it open!
Brad, I can give you some good tips on forging if you’d like. And not just famous people like Sting….
(when I first read the title, I read ‘Box of Yarn’ & was waiting for that to appear in the story. D’oh)
Peggy says
And is the signture in the book different than the box? I wonder if the book really was signed? Brad?
Brad says
The Robert Jordan signature is really real. I waited in a long line to get it. He was signing at Books-a-Million in Arundel Mills Mall. It was back when I was still trying to read that series.
I remember getting up to him at the table and not knowing what to say, so I didn’t say anything. I just mumbled “thanks” after he signed the books. Famous people intimidate me.
Karla says
But what Brad isn’t saying is that it’s an autograph from this Robert Jordan -- http://www.wgntv.com/wgntv-news-team-robert-jordan,0,5302766.htmlstory
