Carl (age 4): “Mrs. Sommerer, I like your shoes!”

Me: (with beaming love) “Thanks, Carl!”

They've had a rip in the right shoe since I've owned them.

Carl: “They’re just like my grandma’s!”

Me: *resigned sigh* “Thanks, Carl.”

I had a similar experience yesterday, but with different results: One of my seventh graders was talking about how he LOVED my receding hairline. He wished he could have one like it. “It’s almost like a mowhawk!” he said. I came away feeling great. Thank you, Stephen!
