Occasionally I become obsessed with the need to buy something stupid. This time it was because of some random comment on the computer that said ‘packable down sweater’. What? How can such a thing even exist?
A search showed that they were talking about the packable things from Isis women’s outerwear. They sell down vests and jackets that stuff down into a little pouch (included) for a million, bazillion dollars.
Dang it. I wanted one.
Well, cheap-o me found one on ebay, and with a few little clicks I won it. (Used – without the stuff
sack.)
Dang it. I needed the stuff sack.
The coat came and I thought about making a bag myself, so I sent an email to the good people at Isis. They ignored me for a good long time then Johanna sent back a reply:
Hi Lauren,
I have looked and been unable to find a stuff sack for you. I apologize
for the delay but I had asked a few different people in the office if
they had them or could help me get one and no was able to locate one. I
was going to measure one of our samples but they are all gone so
unfortunately I don’t even have the dimensions for you.Have a good afternoon!

Retail Customer Service Goddess
Well, aside from the fact that I adore that she calls herself a Retail Customer Service Goddess, I was a bit miffed. Don’t they sell these things? Whatever. I ‘made’ my own.
The plan is to keep it in the car for some sort of ’emergency’. It was actually useful that Saturday we went to all the pawn shops and I was sick. I only had 3 layers on and needed just one more.
I trust that you are better about impulse purchases.
Brad says
Would any marshmallowy-looking down-filled coat smash flat like that, or are these some kind of super smashers?
I think you should smash it into an unlikely container -- perhaps an old milk carton or something. It would give the whole setup some whimsy.
Lauren says
Dang it. Now I need more coats for testing purposes.
Rae says
What you really need are a whole bunch of containers to see which one is the most fun. And because of my great wisdom, I think you will need to go to a container store or some place fun to purchase said experimental containers.
Beth says
I can bring my coat over for experimentation. It’s down and squishable.
Here’s a little tip I’ve learned…if you want to get all the air out of your coat, run it through the spin cycle in your washer. It flattens it to the sides in a snap -- wa-la!
(And yes, I WASH down. I know. Crazy. But I’m not afraid.)
Peggy says
I don’t know….I think having a severed calf in your back seat is quite whimsical…don’t you think?
And I agree with Kristi…that coat is awesome! Wear it more often!
Kristi says
That looks like a great coat. You’re only going to wear it in any emergency????
Lauren says
To Brad, Beth and Rae -- that sounds like a Christmas kind of experiment.
To Peggy and Kristi -- It’s kind of a weeny coat, and the sleeves are a tad bit too short. Plus, I like a coat that covers my tushy. My rear end is very susceptible to cold.
To Deborah -- Yes, you have to shake it out a bit to get it to fluff back up, like a vacuum-packed IKEA comforter.
To Dad -- wocka wocka wocka.
Deborah says
Doesn’t smashing down make it less warm?
Lauren's dad says
No, Deborah. Only smashing up does.
