I really like peeling oranges. It ranks right up there with chopping stuff up. I’d like to think that if Orange Peeling was an Olympic event I’d be a gold medalist, but that honor would have to go to my dad. He is an excellent orange peeler. As a child I remember watching him meticulously – yet effortlessly – peel off every bit of pith.
That’s ok, I’d be a solid silver.
I remember several years ago when I was delirious with the flu, I thought that if I could just eat four or five oranges, I’d be alright.
So I did. All in a row. Sweating and hurriedly eating orange after orange after orange after orange.
I didn’t get better, but I warded off any scurvy that might have been lurking around.
And the oranges were well-peeled, of course.

Peeling is the reason I don’t eat oranges very often. I really like how they taste, but I can’t stand peeling them. Is there such thing as an automatic orange-peeling kitchen gadget?
Lloyd says
Yes, but it is outrageously expensive.
Brad says
Are you talking about Lauren? 🙂

HA!

If you like to eat oranges, I believe that there is one correct way to make orange slices, and it is not the ‘many longitudinal pole-to-pole cuts’ that I see so often. Make ONE pole-to-pole cut, then take each half and make several latitude cuts, so that each slice has several edible Trivial Pursuit pieces. It is a joy to eat that way.

I’m no good cutting something with a knife & the object in my hand…that’s a sure fire way for me to end up with bloody whatever. When I eat an orange I cut in ‘many longitudinal pole cuts’.
I’m going to try your method tonite!

What!?! Who peels an orange with a knife? You use your fingers, and leave on the pith….it’s the zest! Our mom used to peel oranges for us as kids, then she would actually eat the pith that was still attached to the peel.

That is my kindergartners’ favorite joke.
