I don’t know what’s up. Normally I am a champion sleeper up there with Rip Van Winkle and his peers – but the past few weeks I’ve been having trouble falling asleep.
If it’s a windy night – no problem. The sound is soothing and I’m out like a light. But there have been several nights where it is so, so quiet when I’m trying to fall asleep, and dead silence is no good. My stuck inner-ear bones allow me to hear my heartbeat at a frightening volume, so it’s pretty awful.
A small quirk of mine is that I like to sleep with a pillow on my face – pressing down on my eyes as it leans against the wall. The pressure is soothing and knocks me out, much like takeoff on a plane ride. But somehow our pillows are all messed up and I used a feather pillow that put tiny little scratches on my cheek, making me look like the loser in a duel against a mouse. Great. Now I have a fear of feather pillows. Chalk that one up on my ever-growing list of phobias.
Um, where was I going with this? Sorry.
I haven’t had a lot of sleep lately.
Oh, yeah – what’s been working. So after watching 47 minutes tick by on the clock, it turns out that all I need to sleep is Alec Baldwin. Ahhhh…. his golden voice can lull me to dreamland anytime. And as it turns out, he has a public radio podcast! Can you believe it? Dulcet tones and a mind-numbingly dull format? Set that going on the iPod and we’ve got a recipe for sleep success!
(Ok, it’s not a dull format, it’s just that I’m really, really good at ignoring people when they talk.)

A couple years ago, I bought a white noise generator for my bedroom. I use it during the winter when it’s too cold to run a fan.

So how does a podcast work? You download it to your iPod or phone and listen from there? It’s funny I have to ask, but I’m still a CD buyer, so I don’t download many music files.

Yes and no -- I have some podcasts (The Splendid Table, This American Life) that I download on iTunes and put on the iPod. I listen to those when I drive. The Alec Baldwin one I just listen to directly from the station’s website. I’ve never stayed awake for more than ten minutes, though, so I’ve listened to the Lorne Michaels interview several times.

His podcast isn’t about credit cards, is it?

A small quirk of mine is that I have to sleep with a pillow over my face….HAHA! Isn’t it hard to breath? (I have to sleep with my ears covered, but that’s a pretty standard sleeping habit I believe)
Glad you found a way to sleep with Alec.
