There is a lot of old food around here that needs to be taken care of. Lately I’ve been actually trying to cook it, with some….. unpleasant results.
I had an unopened bag of chicken tenders so I thawed it to make chicken and rice but the chicken was freezer burnt! Grrrrrr…. I cut those parts off and we ate tiny, tiny chicken bits in gravy. Alongside that. we had rice that can only be described as ‘dusty’. No, I take that back. It could also be described as ‘stale’ and ‘gross’. I told Lloyd to load up on peas for dinner.
This weekend I discovered I had the stuff to make veggie pizza! Yay! It used up that almost-expired can of crescent rolls, the almost-expired sour cream, the veggies that were almost too wilted to use, and…… the cream cheese that expired in July.
We are our first pieces and then waited to see if food poisoning would set in before we braved another. Turns out – we were safe!
……this time……..

Haha…..way to live on the edge! Brave you are.
I’m ashamed at how much food I waste by not eating it before it expires or turns fuzzy. 🙁

For some reason, I have an easier time eating food that fell on the floor (or even on dirt) than I do eating food that is past its expiration date. Dirt? No problem. Spoilage? AAAHH!

Just how long is the shelf life on cream cheese anyway? We made our own, and I’m afraid to eat it. No mold or green or anything like that. No bad smell either. BUT how long does that stuff stay good?
Lauren says
That is an excellent question. I should confess that this was an opened package of cream cheese, but I sliced off all outer surfaces of cheese, leaving a piece about the size of a chicken bit. I mean, cheese is cheese, right? By definition, something is funky with it.
Deborah says
Of course you made your own.
Kristi says
Whole milk, my dear. REAL whole milk.
