Anna, Sam and Rachel’s daughter, is taking piano lessons. Lately when I’ve stopped by their house, I’ve paged through her books and looked at the songs.
I am a big fan of melancholy music. In college when I was in composition class, all the songs I wrote were in minor keys. Even now, I love a good song that makes me cry.
So….. when I find a song in Anna’s book that is slightly sad sounding….I take a picture of it so I can practice it at home.
I know! I know! It’s not honest. The right thing to do would be to buy my own copy of the book. This is just as bad as photocopying and keeping the copy forever. (I also have several copies of photocopied music from college as well.) And isn’t it a good thing if it inspires me to actually open the piano lid? The lid that is usually just a shelf for accumulating mail and assorted clutter?
Anyway, moral, ethical and legal reasons aside, it makes me happy to practice songs like this. Even with Lloyd’s unknowing help.
