Our church has been going through some renovations, and tomorrow (today/Satuday) there is going to be a tailgate party to celebrate that the parking lot is finished. It’s a great idea – afterward they will hand out tickets to Concordia’s football game (which I’m not going to attend) – but since it’s a social event that involves food, I am stressed out.
There is no food in this house. We are way off on our ‘shop on Sunday after church’ schedule, so the cupboards are a might bare. I figured I could buys some stuff for sandwiches in the morning, but tonight I could maybe make a pie with the four apples on the counter.
One of the websites I frequent had a post about slab pie, so I thought it must be fate. (It doesn’t use as much apple as a regular pie and is more portable.)
The problem was that my little pan is also the one I used for steaming the oven back in my bread-worship days, so it is SOOOOOOO discolored I was ashamed to use it. The word is ‘seasoned’, but the other word is ’embarrassing’. I started scrubbing it with just a regular nylon scrubber, but that was only making it clean and smooth – not scraping it down to inner metal. I grubbed around in the basement and found some steel wool!
Whoa! It looks much better, right?
I scrubbed it some more after this picture (wink), so it’s super clean under the pie.
I used the egg/vinegar/shortening recipe like my Mom’s, and I think it will be just fine.
I did add some craisins to bulk up the fruit, although I know that’s going to gross some kids out.
That will be just fine. More slab pie for me!

Hehe… You’re a magician with baked goods. Nothing in the house, then suddenly a giant pie.
Deborah says
Wow! I agree with Brad. And the craisins are genius!
Lauren's dad says
You did carry out the formula correctly: pie are square!!!
Lauren says
Ha!
Peggy says
I double that Ha….HAHA!!
Kristi says
Incredible. I couldn’t have dreamed that up. Ever.
Lauren's mom says
Mmmmm….cranapple pie!
Jane Sommerer says
The pie looks great. I feel sorry for your hands having to scrub so hard.
