We’ve formed a committee at Lincoln Lutheran to make some decisions about how and when we want to implement a 1:1 (It’s a ratio, read it as, “One to one.”) initiative. That’s where every student at a school has a tablet or laptop and they use them to make the learnification more hard core.
Well, we’re sort of up against an odd deadline. Past experience suggests that in the next few weeks lots of our parents are going to buy tablets and laptops for their kids. But we’d sort of like to steer them toward devices that would work reasonably well at school. But we’re not really ready to make any sort of formal announcement about a 1:1 initiative. But we don’t want parents to purchase devices that won’t work at school. But lots of decisions have to be made before we can move forward. But parents would be upset if we announced in January what types of devices would work well.
The upshot is that, while the 1:1 committee can’t make any formal recommendations, the technology coordinator (who shall remain me) can make some informal recommendations.
The reason I’m telling you all this is that I was hoping you’d check out the recommendations and report back:

You said “but” five times in that paragraph. huh huh.but.

I find the commanders logic sound. Good list. Couldn’t find any others I would include. Dell Venue Pro 8 is getting some buzz and pricing right now. OS takes up lots of space on Windows tabs.

I can’t help you much. When I’m shopping for a computer, I check Consumer Reports, or read the comment section of Amazon, or call Lloyd. Did you try calling Lloyd?
Lloyd says
I’ve been trying, but his phone is always busy. He must be wildly popular.
Peggy says
Well, you certainly have a nice list there! I think this is very thoughtful of you! I’m sure parents will appreciate you making it.
I can’t give any feed back because I don’t know much about such things. I usually just ask the guy at Best Buy what he thinks.
I do need a new laptop btw. I want something inexpensive. I don’t use it for much…mail, internet, store pictures (not as many as you guys). Would the Lloyd have a different recommendation for an adult in search of a laptop.
Lloyd says
If you store your pictures on the internet, you might want to look at those chromebooks.

I liked how you made things simple to understand without being insulting to the readers intelligence. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of good sales through dealhacker.com. Not necessarily buying through dealhacker, but letting them watch websites and storse for me. It might be good to include. If you want.
Here’s what I saw today :
If you’re in the market for a budget tablet, Walmart is offering the 16GB Nexus 7 for just $200 today, matching any upcoming Black Friday deals we’ve seen. For half that price, Best Buy will sell you a 16GB 7″ Kindle Fire HD with promo code KINDLEDEAL.
16GB Nexus 7 | $200
16GB Kindle Fire HD | $100 | Promo code KINDLEDEAL
Lloyd says
That matches the best Nexus 7 price I’ve seen. That’s an older Kindle. The HDX is the current model. I’m worried that parents will be buying last year’s devices because it’s a bargain.
But I guess there’s nothing really wrong with that. If you pay half as much for it knowing (or not knowing) that it will last you a year less, you still probably come out ahead.
Karla says
Aha! I didn’t bother to compare dealhacker with what you said. Very good point.
