Well, the day started out like most Sundays. We went to church, then went grocery shopping, ate lunch then took a nap. Not just any nap, though – a coma nap. We were zonked out on the sofa and the doorbell rang. Nobody moved. Honestly, I didn’t think I could move. I figured they either knew us well enough to come in or they’d go away. Nope. They rang again and Lloyd got up to answer. It was the delivery of a fundraiser pizza! Hooray for future dinner!
I went right back to sleep. When I woke up, Lloyd was putting on his shoes. “I’m going out to mow leaves. If you want to help..” “Zzzzzzzzz,” I responded.
Aargh. I ‘helped’. I raked some leaves out of nooks and crannies so he could mulch them, and moved some bricks so he wouldn’t run over them, but then I left the yard nonsense to go clean out my truck. I took things to the trash and took other stuff inside. Once in the house, the Internet took me hostage for a while.
Back outside, and I got the remaining float stuff out of Lloyd’s car to put in my truck to take to school. One of the items was a fire extinguisher. I figured it was the one I put on the float (Worst Possible Scenario and all that).
Later, as we ate fundraiser pizza, I asked about the fire extinguisher. “It’s from your truck. The leaves caught on fire.”
What!?! The most interesting part of yard work and I missed it? I felt betrayed. In Lloyd’s own words, “I noticed the lawn mower was smoking and the lawn mower doesn’t usually smoke. It was a fair amount and I didn’t know what was going on. I brought it to the sidewalk and turned it off. I looked inside and there was fire, so I blew it out like a birthday cake. It was all the leaf and mulch dust that was burning. Then I got the fire extinguisher from the truck. I let it cool down and then mowed some more.”
See? Best part.

Ah! Another reason for me not to mulch leaves!

I like the smell of burning leaves. But maybe not when I’m mowing.

Mowing & fire,
Mowing & fire,
Everyone wishes for mowing & fire,
How do you measure its worth,
Just by the pleasure it gives….
I love the smell of burning too!
