After Lloyd and I left the auction on Saturday, we stopped in a little town called Wahoo. (You might be familiar with the name from Late Night With David Letterman? Top Ten from the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska? Look it up. It’s a real thing.)
We drove around downtown Wahoo, all three streets of it. There was a little Warehouse/Surplus store that used to be an old Ben Franklin store, and as it turned out, they were selling the surplus from the old Ben Franklin store (hairnets and shoe insoles from the 1960’s), and a bunch of warehouse food (bulk spices, bags of that gross filling that goes in blasphemous filled donuts and giant cans of stuff).
Hmmm….. giant cans of stuff……
How could I not buy a giant can of pickled beets?
Tonight I opened the can so beets could be the vegetable matter at dinner, but I had to repackage them so they wouldn’t get moldy. I mean, I can eat beets pretty fast, but I’m not going to rush this. I have until December of 2015.
Karla says
Awww, I miss Wahoo. My wedding dress came from there. All $250 of it…
Lauren says
Really? That’s amazing!
Karla says
They used to have a bridal outlet there -- no dress was over 300. When the town was campaigning to be Letterman’s home office, they sent him a dress.
Peggy says
Wow! I didn’t know pickled beets stayed good that long. I love your little serving bowl for them. I usually just put them on my plate…but you have to be careful the juice doesn’t contaminate other foods.
Brad says
Mmm… Pickled beets…
Did they have any giant cans of corn? That would remind me of elementary school. We ate that corn all the time.
Lauren's mom says
Lauren,
You probably remember Ed and Elna Dauel. They were both from Wahoo.
Lauren says
Really? I did not know that. Cool!
Brad -- yes, there was corn. Should I stock up?
Peggy -- amen to ‘no cross-contamination’!
Kristi -- Non-fancy beets are in sad, regular-sized cans. 🙂
Kristi says
So what do the “not-fancy” beets look like?
On Halloween we’d have beets for supper and then have bloody-like teeth for trick-or-treating. Good times.
Beth says
I believe I have never eaten a pickled beet in my life. Not even one.
Lauren says
I have some you can borrow if you like. 🙂
Peggy says
I used to give my kids a dime if they would eat one when they were little.
How much will it take for you to try one?
