I like to think about things.
Plans for building a new Child Development Center are in the works. It’s exciting to be at the start of a big project like that, and one of the things that keeps running through my mind is that this is the chance to do everything right. All those “I wish we had _____ so that _______ wouldn’t be such a problem” kinds of things. Of course we won’t be able to do all of them, but I do tinker around with the thoughts every so often.
We did an Annual Evaluation survey with our parents, and one of the comments was “Be sure there’s more room for coats and snow pants”. Amen to that. Each classroom has its own cobbled-together system for coat hooks (thanks to yours truly), and in the fall and spring – it works like a charm. There is plenty of room for a jacket on each child’s hook with no problem. Winter it becomes a little crowded with heavy coats, and when it snows, it becomes a foot-deep wall of insulation with all the stuff crammed together. PLUS on Fridays, the nap bags (bags that hold each child’s sheet, pillow and blanket) are hung on hooks so they can go home to be laundered.
It’s a little crazy.
If we were rich, we would get these. They take up a ton of room but are lovely and expansive and expensive. This little grouping? Yeah, that’s nearly $150 per kid. Zoinks.
(Enter dream sequence:) But I like the idea of hanging coats in the hallway. We could space out hooks a little more, and maybe I could even get some nice people to help build cubbies for less money at some point – the kids could hand their coats on hooks in the back and it would look nice and neat. But is it possible to do something with the edges of the cubbies? What if each edge was notched out a little so you could hang the nap bag on it?
Hmmmmm…. What if the edges of the cubbies were cut in a wavy shape? That would look cool as you looked down the hallway….
…… and then my mind cycles around and around and around and around. Good grief. I need a hobby.

This is a hobby.
I like cubbies out in the hallway. However, at a couple of my schools we couldn’t have cubbies in the hallway because of some sort of fire code. I didn’t understand that.
I love the model. And I agree that the wavy thing would be cool.

Ooooo…..I LOVE your new wave cubbies!! You should totally be a designer. And I have no doubt that you could build them.
What might be really cool to build would be cubbies that expand… like those trailers that have a slide out room. You could have a slide out mode for winter. Just an extra bump for those snowpants.

There should be some show on HGTV where they come in and redecorate early childhood centers. Everybody could cheer and weep at the end. And then take a nap.
