Next weekend (not this weekend), Lloyd and I are going to go see Mount Rushmore. This is marks a first in our marriage because this will be the first out-of-state trip we will have ever taken that does not involve 1) seeing family or friends, or 2) a shopping destination*. Crazy!
Now, one of my many, many personal flaws is that I’m seldom aware of what’s going on around me in real-time. Every choir tour we ever took, I had no idea what we were going to be doing, and even less of an idea while it was happening. “We’re in Munich? Is that part of Germany? When do we eat?” This time, I’d like to have some advance knowledge. While the real purpose of this trip – in my eyes – is to camp more than one night in the Prius and not get eaten by bears, I would also like to explore a little. Here’s where you come in:
Have you ever been there?
What should we do/see/explore?
That’s it. Load me up with advice. The crazier the better. I can’t promise we’ll do all the suggestions, but it will arm me with knowledge.
(*IKEA and the Container Store – both Kansas City)

If I recall correctly, Devil’s Tower is not far from there.
Oh. I just googled it. It’s two and a half hours away. Still, if you’re up for it, I think it’s really cool.

Benn a couple times. Once with parents and siblings. The other with college friends. Slept in the Walmart parking lot in Chadron, NE. Got to Rushmore and it was too foggy to see it. Bought $100 worth merchandise just to say it was not a wasted trip. Suggestion: check out the Crazy Horse monument nearby. The native Americans have a big dream for the area, pretty cool, but have struggled with funds consistently. Bought a rock in the gift shop there to support their cause.

Stay at Custer State Park if possible. If you can’t stay there, drive through it. It is right next to Mt. Rushmore. It’s pretty and there are lots of bison. Also, on the way there, drive through Badlands National Park. Maybe you can stay there. I’m not sure. Badlands is also very close.
Have fun!

Wall Drug. That is all.

I really enjoyed driving the Pigtail Highway. U.S. 15A. Crazy Horse is something I wish I would have gone to see. Would also go up to Deadwood -- the city where Wild Bill Hickok was killed playing cards.

It was fun and as usual we did not plan a thing but had a good trip.
