First of all, Happy Birthday to Lloyd’s Mom! (Hopefully we have the correct date on this one. 🙂 )
Saturday was my friend Annette’s birthday, and a while back she asked if I wanted to go to see the musical Wicked with her. Did I? DID I?? The answer was a resounding ‘yes’! My brother Mark saw it long ago with his wife and after he told me about it, I knew it was a must-see.
The day was delightful. We drove to Omaha and ate in the Old Market at a restaurant in the Passageway. As we ate, I said, “Don’t look now, but there is a Prince impersonator behind you.” There was! He was very receptive to having his picture taken.
Then I spilled food on my shirt. Dang.
No worries! We were in a building made of shops, so I bought a new one. Score!
We meandered toward the theater. We were at the Orpheum theater, which is enormous, glamorous and could be a destination in its own right. The musical itself was breathtaking. I was in awe of the singing, the props, the scenery changes and all the work that has to go into it. After the show I went up close to the stage to try and see how it all was stored and set up. I could have spent an hour wandering around there.
As we walked back to the car, a young man in a t-shirt, shorts and shades was walking the same way and struck up a conversation. “Did you just see Wicked?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you like it?”
“Yes!”
“Was is everything you thought it would be?
“Yes! It was wonderful.”
*awkward pause while walking and wondering if he is going to ask us for money….*
We asked, “Were you there?”
“Yes.”
“Were you… in it?”
“Yes, I was Fiyero.”
Um, that is the love interest/lead male role. We made him prove it. He showed us his hands, which had green residue on them from his scenes with Elphaba, the wicked witch.
We laughed and said, “You were great!” He thanked us and and admitted that he was actually a little hung over. Then I grilled him with questions about the stage stuff and he was most helpful. We met up with the understudy for the good witch and Annette asked her to sing a few bars. She politely declined because she was going to be playing Glenda that night.
It was a lovely day. Thanks, Annette!
