I know that I have weird hygiene habits. It’s part of the ‘You’re using too much soap’ tirade, but here’s the latest installment.
I like the idea of shampoo bars very much. In fact, I made a post about them in 2009. When I went to Kansas City with Rachel and Anna in early August, I bought a regular bar of J.R. Liggett’s. After using it once, my hair felt a little weird. (If I had remembered the post from nine years ago, it wouldn’t have been a surprise.) I googled what to do, and it is recommended that you mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with some water and pour it on your hair after rinsing, then rinse that out. (I follow up with a tiny dab of conditioner on the very ends of my hair.)
I love doing it because it’s like a crazy science experiment. First I get my hair wet, then rub the bar on my head in a couple of spots and lather up. Right after I rinse it out, it’s like my hair has turned to a weird, bristly mess. It’s actually hard to get my fingers through it. BUT! I pour on that vinegary water and it’s like magic! BOOM – smooth, tangle-free hair.
I wash my hair three times a week. That first bar has about two weeks left in it, maybe four. I’d say that three/three and a half months is pretty good for one bar. Plus, the science! The magic! Totally worth it.

So your hair is alkaline after you use that shampoo, and the acid brings it back to neutral pH? Alkaline hair is snaggly? Today I Learned…

I think it might be rinsing all the soap out and smoothing the hair shafts? I don’t know, but my scalp is 100% better than it was.
