Local schools had another snow day, but the weather wasn’t the Snowmaggedon they were predicting, so the CDC was open. It was what it was, but at least the snow was the perfect kind of building snow: light and sticky. We worked on a snow house and tried to keep the ‘little kids’ from knocking it down and/or eating it.

Oy. Kids and screens.
It was a glorious sunny day, and after nap I showed some of the children the gorgeous shadows on the snow. I thought it mi*t be interesting to time-lapse their movement, since we had recently learned about the solar system.
I set up the iPad, but then started the conversation about the real world. (It’s useful to know that there are some construction materials out back.)
Me: “See that bit of tubing sticking out of the ground? It’s in the sun now, but in a little bit it will be in the tree’s shadow?”
Children, crowding around the iPad: “What?”
Me: “Out there. On the ground. Where I’m pointing”
Children, pressing closer to the iPad: “Where?”
Me: “Out. There. In the WORLD.” (Tapping glass)
Children: “What?”
Me: Shuts iPad with a snap.
A weird day
Saturday was good, and also weird. I slept until 8, which was awesome! Lloyd and I went to Etc. (our little thrift store) to shop and saw Beth, which was awesome! At home I watched t.v., which was awesome! Then I decided to try and fix the key on the piano that would ring too long.
Things became less awesome from this moment. The part that is broken was hard to diagnose, and as it turns out, there is a broken wire and unfixable. In trying to put the action back on, I broke a small wooden piece. It is epoxied back together and the action is back on, but two keys are stuck. This is a problem for another day.
Back on the sofa, I heard a weird sound from the dishwasher. Water was spilling out.
When I went to the cupboard to get a pan to catch the water, I found this:
What the what? When did that happen? Oh, well.
The cutest weirdness was in the basement. Wally discovered the manger that I haven’t disassembled yet. First he tried to eat some of the ‘hay’, then he settled right in.
I said it was a weird day.
Annual tradition – check
Well, the bead necklaces have been made, the paper crowns were colored and stapled, the Helper pointed to decorated cereal boxes while the Hander-Outer dropped in treats.
Lots of people had clever, homemade valentines attached to food. I approve of any food-related Valentines.
We ate Kate’s delicious cherry Jello (heart-shaped, of course) and drank our traditional pink milk (milk with a drop of food coloring).
Voices were raised, feet were running, and the teacher made the threat to hang on to Valentine boxes until tomorrow unless everyone could calm down, and she almost made good on it with two boys. Kindness won out, though.
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone.
An explanation
So, yesterday was just a bad day. Local schools had a two-hour late start, which throws our schedule awry. My director works the moment she gets the message, trying to track down staff from home. The phones and messages were busy, so I was busy, and then they called school off, throwing the school-age children into a noisy frenzy. Parents were not letting us know their plans so we couldn’t get an accurate count, then several other wrong things happened, including some rather extreme episodes with some children. It was a long day.
So there’s that. I would worry about a snow day happening later this week but the schools are out Friday and Monday anyway. Grrrrrr……
A difficult day
It was a difficult day. That is all.
