The Pesters and the Gebhardts came over for dinner… or to be specific – for an experiment. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I had some other food around (the fixin’s for BLT’s, but some sad, unripe tomatoes diminished their glory), but the real reason to have some guinea pigs guests around is to have them try homemade funnel cakes!
So many things went wrong during this experiment. First, I made up a batch from Alton Brown, which required a cup of eggs. Seriously, a cup of eggs and a cup of flour. After mixing it up I went looking for other, more reasonable recipes that had less than a cup of eggs. Also, I read several reviews of Alton’s that said, “Way too eggy’. I dumped that batter and made one up from the Amish. You can’t beat an Amish recipe.
It was pretty bland so I added more sugar and some vanilla. For pouring the first few I tried to use an actual funnel, but the opening was too narrow and the final result looked more like a nest of sickly earthworms rather than a robust county-fair-style funnel cake. In the end, just pouring it out from a drinking glass worked the best.
I was particularily delighted with the little test glob of batter to see if the oil was hot enough. He’s adorable, don’t you think?

I love your little boo baby … except for it’s strong resemblence to lumpkin, hmmm … fried lumpkin …
Did you know they make little funnel cake pitchers? Not that I have one … I too just use something else. But I might invest in the pitcher. Did you happen to see the picture of my funnel cake? Not nearly as artistic …

Oh, yeah! My sieve-like memory forgot that you were the impetus for this! (I’ve never typed the word ‘impetus’ before. Hope I’m not swearing.)
If I remember correctly, yours looked very round and beautiful. Send a photo!

We can’t resist a good funnel cake at the fair. To be honest, it didn’t even occur to me to try it at home. Do you have a fry daddy, or did you use a pot? What kind?

It’s like he’s saying, “Ta-da!!! Now, let me get back to my nap.”

If I wasn’t so full of BLT’s and corn I would have eaten more funnel cake. It was country-fair-licious.

What with all the fantastic sweet corn and yummy BLTs and county-fair-a-licious funnel cakes, we almost forgot the sorrow of Brad going home…*sigh*.
But Tim in his little Hawaiian shirt dressed like Mr. Sommerer was another nice sidetrack of the farewell dinner…
We miss you Uncle Brad.
