I went to IKEA on Saturday.
I’ve complained about March already, so I won’t go into the downer side of life right now, but I can tell you that on Tuesday I had a glimmer of an idea – “I could drive to IKEA this weekend. It’s the only weekend where nothing is going on.” That little glimmer kept me going all week. I had a similar glimmer* in early February, but it fell through due to one of our many snowstorms.
I went alone. I LOVE being alone! I could listen to whatever I liked, have the temperature at what I liked, stop to pee whenever I wanted, sleep when I was tired, and best of all – not talk. It was a hermit’s dream come true. Sorry, Lloyd. (He was really broken up, I could tell.)
I left at 6:20 a.m., stopped every couple of hours to snooze a little, and got there around 2:45. I napped in the parking lot first (after learning my lesson last time). Well-rested, I gleefully burst inside to see all the Swedish-inspired glory…… and they were remodeling. They had fewer ‘vingettes’ than usual, and so many tarps swathed across work zones that it felt like being in a creepy hospital movie. I wanted to take more pictures, but there were too many people around.
Looking at the stuff restored my soul, though. It is window shopping at its finest! I even bought some things. They had the chair I wanted (so Brad doesn’t have to go through the bother of shipping), a lamp for Beth, and some cool knick-knacks for school. Three hours and I was done. ‘Bye, Minneapolis. Maybe someday I’ll come and go to the Mall of America, which is right across the street.
Freezing rain was forecasted for the area, so I left early. The trip back was uneventful. I wanted to see if I could do a trip that involved sleeping in the car instead of renting a hotel room, and while that was partially successful, I’ll leave that for tomorrow’s post.
I was home by 3 a.m.
Zip, zip – done. Worth it.
*That’s a lot of times to say glimmer. Glimmer glimmer glimmer.

Woo!! that looks awesome!! : )
Brad says
Yay! You found a white chair! I’m glad you got one. I was a little worried about how much it would cost to send a washing machine box.
Lauren says
Yeah, I didn’t realized it was so ginormous. Sorry ’bout that.
Beth says
I’m going to do that trip this summer sometime.
Because I’m a copycat. But I’ll take a friend, because I’m an extrovert.
Jill says
Pick me! Pick me!
Kristi says
Up and back in LESS than a day. You are incredible!
Cool chair!
Peggy says
I can’t believe you travel that far for a store…IKEA needs to know about this!
Glad you had a fun trip & that your stomach is feeling better. AND I love the swing too! Is it fun? Is it a ‘teacher only’ chair?
Rae says
I have been trying to plan a family summer vacation for weeks now, with no success. Maybe we will just travel to IKEA. The kids would love that!
