It was a delightfully unproductive Saturday. I got a few things done, but mostly just napped and watched old t.v. episodes on Hulu. (I love you, Hulu!)
One big accomplishment was mowing the lawn. It’s only the second mow of the season, but I noticed that even though all the wheels were set at the same height, the stripes of newly-mown grass looked uneven. Lloyd turned over the mower to have a look at the blade.
I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.
We are not people who clean out their mower regularly. In fact, I have never cleaned out the mower. I’ve left it in the rain once, but I’m sure that doesn’t count. I also am not terribly careful about picking up sticks, so I’ve accidentally mulched a couple of big ones before. However, I believe these big chunks came from when I hit a water main pipe while mowing at the CDC last week. (The top sticks out a couple of inches above the ground and was hidden by deep, deep grass.)
Ironically, earlier in the day I was asking Lloyd if you could mow a small yard with a scythe. We had a discussion about sharpness vs. the speed of the blade. This is proof that a dull object moving at a rapid rate of speed can ‘cut’ grass.

Every spring I think to myself that I should take my mower in for a tune-up and sharpening. Now I know I should so it doesn’t look like that when I bring it in.

It’s funny to me that your post is about mowing because I have been congratulating myself all morning for mowing last night instead of today. When I got up this morning, there was snow on the ground. Hard to mow in the snow.
Also, we have taken our mower in for a spring tune-up and blade sharpening the last 2 years. We bring in the mower all beat up and covered with grass and leaves. When we pick it up, it looks like a brand new mower.

Heh. I’m married to the ultimate “Worker Bee”. Harold changes the oil and spark plug in the lawn mower every Spring. He runs all the extra gasoline out in the Fall for storage in the Winter. And sharpens the blade at least two times a summer.
I’m still giggling at that picture…
Beth says
Oh, and if you haven’t already sharpened the blade, we have a bench grinder -- come on over. 😀
Kristi says
Harold changes the wiper blades regularly, too, yes?
Beth says
Yes. Yes he does. At least seasonally, if not bi-monthly.

…because the weather changes at the drop of a hat in Nebraska.
