The other night I was digging my headphones out from behind the computer and one of the earbuds stuck to the side of the iMac.
Huh.
I knew that the remote (which I have misplaced) sticks to the monitor with a magnet, but for some reason I figured the magnet was in the remote. It is not! This discovery leads to all sorts of possibilities!
Handy earbud storage:
Always have a pen when you need it!
Or perhaps a theft-deterrent?
Oh, possibilities. You are endless.

I’m always worried about magnets next to electronics. Aren’t they incompatable or something? They sell magnetic money clips. Wouldn’t carrying one of those in your pocket erase your credit cards and scramble your phone?
Lauren says
Exactly what I thought. Aren’t magnets by a computer supposed to wreck everything? Then this computer has one inside. Wacky.
Lloyd says
It depends on (a) where the magnet is and (b) how strong it is. It’s a bad idea for you to stick (strong) magnets on your computer, but the guys who made the computer have a pretty good idea where they should and shouldn’t go.
I think the Hard Drive is the only thing that you can actually damage with a magnet now-a-days, and I’m not even sure about that.
Peggy says
I just tried my computer & nothing. Is it just Macs that have this feature?
Here’s hoping you never have to have a metal plate in your head.
Deborah says
HA! She’d be even more stuck to her computer.
Kristi says
We have a Mac; I can’t get anything metallic to stick to it. I tried paperclips, earbuds, and pens; nothing worked. You must have a Mac with superpowers.
Karla says
Oh man! Now I can’t wait to get home and try this tonight! I so hope our Mac does this too!
Lauren says
It’s an older iMac, and apparently the new ones don’t have the awesomeness. Too bad, new technology -- you are missin’ out!
Lauren's dad says
According to Phil, the new iMac’s display is held to the case by magnets. I found at least five spots on Mom’s iMac to which a paper clip would stick.
Lauren says
Cool! You can keep emergency paperclips at the ready!
