The art of ‘meh’ cleaning.

January 31, 2011 by Lauren 16 Comments

I’ve said this before – I’m big on having ideas, and terrible at follow-through. Here’s another harebrained idea I’m testing out, though.

I’ve talked about commercial cleaning before, and a few years ago I was all crazed for FlyLady.com (the ideas, not actually following the schedule), and of course watching Hoarders every so often has kept the house fairly non-disgusting, but when it comes down to it, I’m a slob. There are things around here that would make Clean People faint. It’s not that I care – we don’t have people over – but I do think about cleaning occasionally.

So here’s what it is: A weekly list of things to cross off, because I love crossing things off! I went ahead and put stuff on that we do every week anyway – like grocery shopping and the laundry – because of the automatic crossing-off satisfaction. The beauty of it is, if we don’t get to something this week, no big whoop – I haven’t dusted some rooms since I was in my thirties, so what’s another week going to hurt? (This is borrowed from Beth’s genius idea of shaving your legs every day. Swipe, swipe – miss a few spots? Big deal, you’ll get ’em tomorrow.)

I have also given myself permission to do a bad job on the new chores. For instance, I swept my bathroom tonight. I didn’t even do a good job, because you know why? I never sweep my bathroom, and as of now it looks 100% better than it has in months! I might even sweep in a corner next week!

Lloyd wants me to write 'sit on the sofa' for his own chore.

You should make “making a list” something you can cross off the list.

I LOVE crossing things off a list too!! But I suffer from ‘have to be done’syndrone. Once I make a list & start crossing off, I’m antsy until everything is crossed off.

You should just make lists that are one item long. Then you could still cross it off, but wouldn’t have to worry about anything else.

      You’re welcome.

I do shave everyday. And it does mean that I don’t have to be so careful. And I do recommend it.

And I’m pretty sure I also clean that way. If you clean/pick-up a little every day it’s never so bad.

    So apparently that’s my M.O.

    Welcome to my life.

Ha! After reading your comment about shaving and then reading your next comment about cleaning, I thought you talking about cleaning yourself. You don’t have to be careful, clean a little every day, its not so bad.

My problem about lists is, when I put a list together I always pick the hardest task or the task that takes the longest and try to tackle it first. By the time I’m done with it I don’t want to do anything else.

I have purposefully tried to make tasks that take only one or two songs/commercials. It’s helpful for the ADD like me.

Amy – I like the Bingo idea quite a bit!

I’m nearly the opposite. I’ll almost always work on the easy ones until only the hard ones are left.

I like putting things like “showering” and “waking up” on my list. It makes me feel accomplished when I have more things checked off.

        Usually I have a big task going, and then I wander off and do an easy task or two… I’m rather ADD too ^^;;
