Well, the Fourth of July has come and gone again in Seward. It was pretty fun. This was the first time I’ve ever gone to the anvil firing at 7:30, and I’m glad I did (though I don’t need to do it again). It’s where they stack two anvils on top of each other with a big washer filled with gunpowder in between them. They light the fuse and – BOOM! – the Fourth of July begins all over America. It’s like magic.
We walked the square and I bought some stuff – a ring, a tank top and a coffee scoop. (I’ll show them to you later.)
We watched the parade – the first one I’ve seen in…. three years? four years? We cheered for the participants and now I have a sore throat. Awesome!
In keeping with tradition, Lloyd bought a big honkin’ think of noisy firecrackers to light at the Royuk’s house after dinner. He bought a roll of one million, I believe. He had a lot of help setting it up, and it was so long they couldn’t keep it together as they unrolled it! It stretched around the corner and Daniel lit it from both ends. Scroll down to see a video of the event – all 3 1/2 noisy minutes of it.
Here it is in pictures:
Here’s the video. It sounds like someone endlessly popping popcorn, but it was much louder in real life. (Oh, and I did a lot of camera swinging. Sorry.)
All in all, a very fine day!

WOW, wish we could have seen that! I recall lighting fireworks in the St John’s parking lot with you once upon a time. Maybe that was before Brent moved to town.

and the three things my husband remembers about 4th of July in Seward: a terrible traffic jam, Lauren’s American flag made of vodka jello knox blox shots, and Charles’s delicious biscuits and gravy for breakfast.
Peggy says
Dang…3 1/2 minutes long!!! Bring on the video!
Brad says
I couldn’t believe how loud they were. I uncovered my ears for a moment to get a picture and I was afraid I would damage my hearing. Note to self for next year: get ear plugs.
Kristi says
That is long! So did you warn the entire 2 blocks of neighbors that this was going to happen?
Lloyd says
My favorite thing is that the neighbors all come out to watch. Cars stop in the middle of the road. It’s wonderful. After a full minute people are watching from all over.
Peggy says
I would love to witness this! Maybe we could make one next year….but I don’t think there are any Red Rhinos in these parts.
Pertaining to the anvil firing: I found this.
Dangers:
Individuals may be crushed by a falling anvil, which can result in severe injury or death.
