St. Patrick’s Day should always be celebrated on a Friday. The kids get excited, then we all go home to process it for a couple of days. On Monday, it’s a distant memory.
I really like the holiday, mostly because it doesn’t come with any pressure to make gifts – unlike Christmas or Mother’s/Father’s Day. The leprechaun comes to visit, and his mere presence brings joy! (And also cautions from teachers to whisper, lest we scare him away.) It’s a day full of delightful lies! (Well, not really lies. I’ve decided that I’m officially a leprechaun. Can I put that on my resume’?)
This year I was excited to try out another Rainbow Cake from notmartha, and it was successful!
Mid-morning we had our clue that something was up: “At 10:00, look where it’s hot.” We wandered the school until we got to the oven in the kitchen (which was not hot. Stupid leprechaun.) There was another clue that said, “You all thought my gold you’d take, but here are pennies and some cake.” Apparently leprechauns talk like Yoda, but we did find the pot full of pennies and ate some rainbow cake.
The kids were so hepped up about finding the pennies that it did not register with them at all that they were eating a rainbow. I, er, I mean ‘the leprechaun’ could have saved a lot of aggravation and just made brownies.

We had a visitor here too. Our leprechaun apparently used the facilities (and didn’t flush) because there was green water in the toilet. Unfortunately, the first one to get up in the morning did not turn on the lights so the evidence was down the drain.

Haha! That is an AWESOME idea! Next time we have St. Patrick’s Day on a weekday, I’m staining all the toilet water in the school green.
And Lauren, you are really good at actually making the cross-section of your cake look like an actual rainbow! I would think the colors would just all mash up, but they curve and everything.

The cake is awesome!! I think I want to make one, but drats…I just realized I only have a devils food cake mix.
But it’s not too late for me to color the toilet bowl green! Muahhhh!
Happy Green Day!

PS…Is your flatware Oneida Flight? That’s what I have!
(Also, Matt enjoyed the green toilet water. Muahhhh….or what sound do leprechans make?)
Lauren says
Yes, it is! They were a wedding gift from my brother, and I have since bought four more packs, because we always seemed to sacrifice small spoons to the great disposal god. He never sent rain, though, stingy god.

You could make a cake like that for every major holiday. Valentine’s Day, 4th of July, Christmas. Okay, so I only came up with a few.
