Dang Lloyd. He came home after the Lincoln Lutheran school concert last week, walked over to his computer, and loaded up a song. It sounded very familiar.
Then he said that it’s called Baba Yetu and the high school choir had performed it at the concert. He also said that it written by Christopher Tin and it was the first song ever written for a video game that had ever won a Grammy. At this point I looked at him like he was crazy and said, “No, that’s an old song. I’ve heard it a bunch of times before.” He looked at me like I was crazy and said, “Yes. From the many, many, many, many times that I have played Civilization IV.” A little argument ensued where I insisted that this was a song from my childhood, but eventually logic won out and I agreed that yes, it was from that dumb game he played. I had never noticed before how very catchy it is.
Then he got me with this: “It’s the Lord’s Prayer.”
Whaaaaa?!?!?! It is! It’s in Swahili, but it is so dang catchy I’ve been humming it over and over the past few days. Now I just have to learn Swahili so I can sing along.
Here’s the video game version:
And here’s the adorable children’s choir version:
Wow. That IS catchy. I’ll be singing it all morning:
“Baba, yatu, yatu, bla-bla bla bla ba bla-bla ba…”
I need some entertainment today. I loved this. Wish it would have lasted longer.
Here us a site with the lyrics in both Swahili & English. http://mwanasimba.online.fr/E_songs_baba_yetu.htm
The LL choir performance of it was lovely, & Ian was THRILLED when he recognized it fro Civ IV (in some ways he’s a mini Lloyd! )
Thanks, I was hoping for something like that.
