My kids sang for church Saturday night. It was our end-of-year get-together but it was (1) the day after the last day of preschool, (2) graduation day for Concordia University and our local high school and (3) the day before Mother’s Day. Many families told me ahead of time that they wouldn’t be able to come because they had other plans. My expectations were low – I was going to be thrilled if 8 children showed up, but we had a respectable 20!
Here’s a video of us if you want to hear us sing at lightning-fast speed. I get amped-up nervous (not scared nervous) and like to race through songs. Oh, well.
I accompany our group on my little tenor guitar, and I’m not ashamed about my playing. I can’t do anything fancy – I just bang out the chords. The kids don’t care and neither does the congregation. Our kids are so cute they could stand up there and pick their noses and everyone would oooh and ahhh.
Afterward we had a little snack fest in the cafeteria. I hid my guitar, mingled with the families, and had a great time. Afterward, we packed up and went home.
On Monday, I forgot my guitar case at home. No problem – we sang along to the little ukulele and the kids thought that was awesome.
On Tuesday I forgot my guitar. Dang it. We sang with the ukulele and this time the kids teased me about being forgetful. *sniff* Doesn’t hurt…
This morning (Wednesday), though, I remembered! I grabbed the case on the way to the truck and….. it… felt ….. light.
Dang it! My actual guitar was still in its hiding place – on top of the microwave in the home ec room! And are the church doors open at 6:40 a.m.? They are not.
The kids teased me again, but this time – I had a gripping story to tell. 😉

Ha! Awesome singing! My favorite part:
“…that saved a WRETCH! like MEEEEEEE!”

One of the moms told me that her daughter insisted that it was ‘wrench’, despite the fact that we had talked about what a wretch was (someone with no hope). The mom said she finally gave up arguing -- “God save the tools”.

Loved it!!Lauren you did a remarkable job with those preschoolers! You could not only hear them really well, but you could understand the words they were singing. No easy task with that age. Kudos to you!!
(When my son Joe was in preschool, he was on the steps of the church dressed in a sheperd’s costume in the front row & the group was about to sing. Everyone was so quiet, as the kids waited for their que to start singing. I think you could have heard a pin drop. My son then yells out, “Mom…I’m too hot in this” and pulls at his costume. It was very innocent & everyone laughed so loud & long and Joe had no idea what was happening.)
