Thrifty Saturday

September 7, 2013 by Lauren 6 Comments

I like to look on the bright side of things, and rather than say that Lloyd and I kind of just sat around all day, I prefer to say that we saved about three thousand dollars.

‘How so?’ you ask? Well, it all begins with science fiction.

Lloyd is a big science fiction fan. (I am too, but he is in a completely different league than I am.) Robert Heinlein – a very big name in the genre* – is one of his favorites. While surfing the web, I happened to see that his bed is for sale.

It’s not just the bed Robert Heinlein slept in, it’s the bed he built with his own two novel-writing hands! I wouldn’t be so excited, except I looked it over and it seems that Heinlein and I have similar building styles. I think there might be a few L-brackets in there!

We spent a few frenzied minutes seriously considering bidding on it. It was listed at $1,600 when we looked, and really, we’d just have to get a couple of plane tickets, fly to California to pick it up, rent a U-Haul and bring it back home!

or…….

I could buy some plywood and build an exact replica for a couple hundred bucks.

or……

I could go back to surfing the web and drinking coffee.

Decision made.

* I said ‘genre’. That may have been the first time ever.

That bed is super awesome. Whoever gets it is going to be one happy Heinlein fan.

Is the bidding closed? How much did it end up selling for?
