Parents at the CDC have locked their keys in their cars more often than you’d think. I’d say about once every two years…. and you were thinking once every three years, right? Right?
On Tuesday, a funny thing happened: one of the moms had brought a kitten along in the car, and while she was bringing her son inside, the kitten stepped on the car lock and locked itself inside. Thankfully the air conditioner was running, since dad had to drive from 20 miles away and it was sunny and HOT. I felt badly that I didn’t have the skills to assist her.
But now I do! Well, maybe not the skills, but I’ve got the kit! That afternoon I ordered the Big Easy felony kit and it arrived today! If only my future prison stints will go as quickly.
Of course, I felt that I should ruin try it out on my on vehicle first. I had watched the video a couple of times and I knew that the truck would be difficult. I don’t have automatic locks, so I’d have to either try to roll down the crank window or open the handle. I started by doing the nifty trick (learned from the video) of angling the rear-view mirror so I could see what I was doing, but wound up putting it in an unfixable position and staring at the gas pedal.
It was just too hard. I should have ordered the loop attachment so turning the window handle or grabbing the door handle would have gone better. I gave up after fifteen minutes and waited for Lloyd to come home so I could wreck his Honda.
No photos of this, because after i ignored Lloyd’s pleas for mercy, I went outside, smacked the wedge in the Honda door and started to thread the rod through when my across-the-street neighbor who I’ve never formally met came across the street hollering, “Did you lock your keys in?”. I then had to sheepishly explain my situation while he stared at me with a totally not-thinking-about-moving-away look on his face, and then we talked about the best way to go about busting into my own car.
The solution? Bend the rod. A lot.
I need more practice! Any takers?
Hello?

Is this thing on?
