When life hands you gross fruit….

February 19, 2014

It was an awful day. It started out fine, got worse, and ended badly. I don’t want to go into all the details because it will seem like whining, and I have been rather glass-half-empty with these posts lately. Instead, let’s talk about (scanning iPad to see if there are any non-school photos)…. Meyer lemons and blood oranges.

A couple of weeks ago Lloyd bought some of these. He is a huge fan of the Cutie mandarin oranges, and decided to branch out into the more curious citrus varieties. He sat down and tried to eat a lemon.

“Yuck,” he said.

“Surprise, surprise, it’s a lemon,” I said. I know they’re supposed to be less sour than regular lemons, but still.

Then he tried a blood orange.

“Yuck,” he said.

“Surprise, surprise, it’s made of blood,” I said. Then I picked him up after he fainted and said I was kidding. (You know I’m lying, right?)

Anyway, these fruits sat around on the counter slowly dehydrating when I got the hair-brained idea to make a delicious drink out of gross fruit. I squeezed them, added some sugar and water and….

Guess how it turned out?

I’ve never gotten blood oranges before. They taste bad?

I’ve never had blood oranges straight up, but a hotel in Rome had blood orange juice on the breakfast buffet. I thought it was quite tasty. I bought some at the grocery store when I got back and some said it tasted like grapefruit juice.
