House jobs and a sick boy

October 31, 2021 by Lauren 1 Comment

Lloyd got sick this week. He came home on Wednesday with a fever, stayed home Thursday, felt better on Friday (no fever) and worked half a day, then came home and has been a blob since. Luckily, I remembered that when he is sick he breaks out in night sweats, so we wisely doubled up the bedding with a big towel underneath. Sure enough, last night he woke up and put his sheets in the washer. (Brad, I’ve been sleeping in your room.)

Anyway, since he’s kind of useless right now, I’ve been doing some jobs around the house. The new chairs arrived, which involved a lot of shuffling, and I have a plan for re-doing the front entry so the closet door can actually open. I’ll leave you on that cliffhanger and update you later this week. I’m off to watch church online so I don’t carry Lloyd’s grossness to the people.

Happy Sunday!

Little Bits

October 29, 2021 by Lauren 2 Comments

Some repair things came up at work last week that required the use of my drill. I have some ‘suitcase’-style containers that hold odds and ends – zipties, batteries, washers, nails, screws, etc. The two drill bits that I haven’t lost live in the ‘screws’ container, and it became obvious last week that they were very, very dull. I called Lloyd and asked him to pick up a small case of drill bits. “I just need six or eight,” I said.

When I came home, he had purchased a large case of 60 drill bits, because why wouldn’t I need more? He didn’t understand my vision, and very kindly bought a smaller case the next day.

It’s perfect. I cut out one of the little dividing walls in the suitcase:

…and now that case has a home.

I give it a year before I lose all those bits and have to get another, but I’ll take it!

Cold and rainy

October 28, 2021 by Lauren 1 Comment

Yesterday was a pretty solid day of rain. It’s the one type of weather that keeps my class inside, and it was a loooooong day. Some of them brought umbrellas and boots, but we didn’t go out.

Today is supposed to be less rainy, but cold, with a wind advisory of 30-50 mph gusts. We’re going out! (I’m also taking a real coat.)

Happy Thursday!

A piece of real furniture

October 27, 2021 by Lauren 3 Comments

Back in the summer, Brad bought a lamp for his room. I don’t know if you remember, but I repainted his room gray and tried to streamline the room a bit. For end tables, I just plonked down some outdoor folding tables and put a little LED lamp on it for reading. Very ‘college student chic’.

Well, Brad’s lamp – which you will see in a bit – required something far more sturdy that that weenie table. Lloyd and I have been looking for something for a fair bit, but we had some requirements. It should be rectangular, and preferably with a shelf for tissues and cell phones and the like. I saw something in a thrift store a couple of weeks ago, but it didn’t speak to Lloyd.

I was looking at Facebook this weekend, and a guy in Lincoln was selling a mid-century modern table for $35. I showed it to Lloyd and he was game to get it. I was the first of 8 people in line for this table, and no wonder. Here’s what its twin is going for on a website: $245

Ours is not as red, and has cat troubles.

Once in its proper place and de-catted, it holds the lamp beautifully!

There’s a story behind that lamp, but that’s for another day. Happy Wednesday, everyone!

I moved a table.

October 26, 2021 by Lauren 2 Comments

Dang it. I need to load more photos onto this so I can add photos more easily. There’s a story about another table, but I will wait until tomorrow to show you. Let’s talk about the basement.

In the early morning, I make a list of the things to try to accomplish that day. I’ve learned that if I’m actually going to do any ‘home’ things on the list, they need to be very, very small things. Otherwise it is too overwhelming to even consider the job. So, yesterday’s item on the slow, long-term ‘clean the basement’ list was to move three boxes over and then move a table three feet.

Mission accomplished! I can’t wait to write today’s tiny job. ……maybe I’ll move a box back……

(By the way, I am cracking up that my post titles now sound I like I’m a second-grader writing about my summer vacation. Simple sentences only.)

I went to a movie.

October 25, 2021 by Lauren 1 Comment

Lloyd and I went to a movie Sunday afternoon. In a theater. And – this is the big thing – I stayed awake the whole time!

I haven’t gone to a movie in forever. Lloyd and Samith go on dates all the time, and it’s there thing. Not me so much. There are so many reasons it’s preferable for me to wait until I can watch it at home – I can pause it when I need to pee / I can turn on closed captioning when I’m chewing / I can look up who that actor is right away / etc. The theater, though? Well, the sound is never quite right, I get really sleepy during parts, and people get grumpy when I yell out, “Turn on the captions!” (Just kidding.)

We saw Dune, part 1. I saw the 1980s version and have read the books, and I really enjoyed it. It was nice to have the theater experience, and I just may go to another movie sometime in the next couple years.
