I have been trying to reform my slovenly ways the past several years, and am getting a better handle on it. I have some basic daily habits under my belt (dishes/litter box/deal with the mail/etc.) and am trying to establish some weekly chores.
Sam and I were talking about cleaning a while ago and he is perfecting a ‘forever calendar’ system where he assigns a specific house job to each day of the month, but that is too much for me to wrap my head around at this point. I am starting small: Alliterative Chores. I have some little jobs to do each day of the week I am perfectly content if it’s just a ‘swish and a swipe’ amount of work, because something is better than nothing. Here’s what I have so far:
Monday – Mop. I have a microfiber mop that I use to dry dust the floors. Maybe in January I might even do a wet mop.
Tuesday – Tub and Toilets. I scrub the tub when I’m in the shower and the toilets get cleaned.
Wednesday – Wipe. This can be a dry dust of shelves/tv/etc. or a wet wipe of cabinet fronts/fridge/stove. If I’m feeling energetic, it might be all of them.
Thursday – Throw away. Look around for things that need to go. They can go in a donation box or in the trash. Nobody needs a dozen old cough drops that are hidden about the place. Expired food should go.
Friday – Floors. I recently bought a Shark Apex canister vac that is both exhilarating and horrifying to use. I am aghast every time I use it at the amount of human and cat hair that it picks up. So gross. So fun.
Anyway, I’m a 2 1/2 weeks into this system and it’s been working ok. I find that I can do a little bit before I leave for work and then don’t have to beat myself up when I get home exhausted. “I’ve already done a little…… just watch some t.v. now….”

I like the alliteration. At school I have Watering Wednesday where I water all my plants. Great minds think alike.
