We are always short-staffed at work over the holidays. We employ many college students, and most of them head home for the holidays. This past week we haven’t had a person to work at one of our entry doors – greeting parents and walking children their rooms after a health check.
My own classroom is right by an entry door, so we don’t need an extra person – I just have a doorbell out there. The parents ring the bell, I step out to greet and bring the student in. On Monday, due to the staffing situation, I ripped my doorbell off the door, taped it to the unmanned door and posted a couple of badly-written signs explaining what to do. It worked…. sort of.
Monday night I went to Wal*Mart and bought a new doorbell. Tuesday morning I set it up and now the whole place is ding-dong, ding-dong during the morning hours. We’re certainly ringing in the new year!
