It’s been pretty weird weather lately. We’ve had a couple of days of extreme wind, and yesterday the sky couldn’t decide what to do: windy, cloudy, sunny, rainy, snowy, sleeting – it was weird.
Well, that’s just spring. bipolar and anxious like the rest of us. In preschool, we talk about how New Life is coming. We watch the eagles and we talk about baby plants. Beans are the best for this. I give them dry beans and ask them to open them. (There was a lot of stomping and trying to crack them like eggs.) Then we take some soaked beans and open them. The seed coat just slips off and the two halves open to reveal the baby plant inside. I always marvel at the wonder of it.
We get some ready to sprout by putting them in a glass jar with paper towels – it gives us a window into the process. Then I tell the children that I love watching this….. but I am a terrible gardener. “You’ll have to remind me to water these and keep them healthy.” They regale me with stories of their moms/dads/grandparents and their gardeners, and how good they are at keeping plants alive. I listen with great interest, knowing that these little plants are not going to make it.
….. and that’s spring. 😉
