Home 'Improvement'

Worthy of investigation

January 20, 2009 by Lauren 14 Comments

I was walking home today and saw the most peculiar thing.  Remember back in the summer when Brad and Lloyd walked with me to work and we saw the house up on stilts?  Well, it’s all done now with a real basement and windows and a porch and solar lights,

It’s downright purty.

and, of course,  a smoking chimney sticking up out of the yard.

Gnomes? Skilled moles?

What the???  I don’t know what is up, but I must find out and incorporate it into my theory of all things heaty.

Fool me twice…

January 19, 2009 by Lauren 13 Comments

Lloyd’s a stinker.  He outright lied to me again* and said that he didn’t have school but the teachers had a ‘workday’.  After dropping me off this morning – he came right back and cleaned the basement!!!  There are no ‘before’ photos, but trust me – it was awful.  Piles of junk, papers, boxes and assorted nonsense all over.  It’s so clean now, I am inspired to get the rest of the house in tip-top condition!

Clean, yet blurry.

Garrrrrrrr.  As happy as it makes me, it pains me that he is so good at this.  How does he have the ability to stay in one spot and keep working on it without the urge to cook/melt/sew something or to try to make a solar heater for cats?  Such laser-like focus.  Right now, I have four chores in the works: folding laundry (half done), sorting through papers upstairs, trying to remember to take that vacuum  upstairs, and…… eh, I’ll remember the other one later.

*He did this in March of 2007, and once before, but I can’t find the proof.

More than you wanted to know.

January 8, 2009 by Lauren 15 Comments

This is for Christina.

When Lloyd and I moved into this house, we didn’t have a bedframe.  We just put the box spring and mattress on the floor and called it good for many, many years.  A while back (five years?), he went on a little summer trip to see his family, and I was inspired by the show While You Were Out.  You’ll need to know that Lloyd teaches chess to his middle school kids, and he is the only person I know who reads big, giant, boring books about chess. I had found a border online that showed castle-y things (this was back when I liked border), and we already had a ton of extra chess pieces around the house.

I took the picture of the least dusty set.

Some paint, some trim and the chess pieces completed the walls.  I had also purchased a couple of under-bed storage units made for twin beds, but cobbled them together for our queen bed.  That raised the bed substantially – the first night after I made them I slept in the middle of the bed because I was afraid I’d fall off.   By borrowing the neighbors router the ‘chessboard headboard’ was completed.  So there you go – our crazy chess room.  Can you see how my pillows are eight inches higher than Lloyd’s due to the incline pillow?

I didn’t have time to really clean the room.

And in case you’re wondering, yes – that’s a blanket over the window.  It’s eight degrees warmer on this side.

The Loot, for Gretchen

November 29, 2008 by Lauren 16 Comments

lotsa storage stuff

So here’s my loot. It’s not a whole bunch, but I went for the looking, not so much the owning.  It’s mostly organizational things for school, but there are a couple of pretty trinkets for the classrooms, too.  I bought a nightlight, some canisters, lots of magnet-y storage things, some clear wall bins, some plastic placemats, a wine rack, some bowls, and a pillow.

The only thing I bought for home is for Brad’s room, which is ridiculous because he lives next door to the IKEA in Baltimore. I couldn’t resist, though.  It’s a bolster pillow that goes with the winter bedding in his room.  I liked the stripes on the cover, but once I saw how they packaged the actual cushion – I was sold!  It combined my love of gadgetiness and vacuum sealing in one, flat airless package.

Like a slab of salmon

Cry yourself to sleep on your huge pillow!

Yeah, I took the headboard off. Brad’s pretty tall to sleep in a short bed.

What didn’t I buy?  A new chair for school, a kitchen sink and wooden countertops for home, a lamp for the living room, a cool glass pitcher/cubby thing, and a steel toilet seat.  By the way, Gretchen, I took the quiz and failed miserably!  For those of you who aren’t completely sick of me going on about this, I leave you with this. (I forgot that it has a little swear in it.  Ignore that.)

Dnag it.

November 25, 2008 by Lauren 14 Comments

No new oven for me.  Boooooo.

It had like twelve screws.

In other news, Cricket had a ‘sample’ dropped off at the vet today.  Stupid cat. Why’d she have to make me love her? I’ll keep you posted about  her progress.  *sigh*  Maybe we should just have them both put to sleep and have a long weekend of mourning.  (Well, I would mourn and Lloyd would bring me Kleenex.)

Vote!

November 20, 2008 by Lauren 13 Comments

It’s after 9 p.m., it’s been a long day for both of us, and I’m waiting for a load of laundry to finish.  Not having any good material to post, I leave you with this picture of the top of the stairs.  Vote for the weirdest thing in this picture.

If you picked the trees, you’re right. Towels are second.

P.S. I typed this all one-handed because I’m holding a bunch of hangers and am too lazy to just put them down. I can tpye surprisingly well. Rats.
