School

Meh. Not as good as I’d hoped.

February 11, 2015 by Lauren 5 Comments

Those dumb cookies are done, and they are not what I had hoped.

Sometime in elementary school we did an ‘art’ project where we took half a heart, cut off a strip around the edge, glued that down; cut another strip, glued that down on the opposite side; back and forth etc. It looked something like this:

image

I wondered if you made red-and-white pinwheel cookie dough (but more an oval shape than a wheel shape), cut it on a severe diagonal, flipped it and reassembled, would the cut cookies look like those hearts?

image

Would it?

image

Dang. That cut is lopsided. Rats.

image

Avert your eyes! Cookie guts! (This dough was too warm. Should have let it chill longer.)

Anyway, the lopsided heart-shaped dough log chilled for days, then I did the ol’ slice-n-bake on ‘seasoned’ -not dirty – ‘seasoned’ cookie sheets.

Changes should be made, but I’m too tired to revamp these.

After baking, the pointy part wasn’t very pointy, so they kind of look like mutant mittens.

Next year, cookies. Next year.

Funny to me.

February 10, 2015 by Lauren 4 Comments

1) I have something going on every night this week. When I get home late, Lloyd proves his amazingness  by having the house all cleaned up. I don’t know how he does it. Tonight he was cleaning out the freezer and when I got home he kept pulling out weird parcels and asking me what they were for. The answer to almost every one was, “To start a fire.”

2) Early this morning I had the privilege of noticing that one of the toddlers was walking funny. He is in big-boy underwear so I asked him if he needed to go potty. He did. As he sat silently on the toilet I asked if pee was coming out. He shook his head ‘no’, and then his face took on a rather strained look. I struggled not to laugh. After a few minutes he looked down.

“I pooped!”

“You sure did.”

(second glance)“It looks like a cawwot!”

“…….I’m gonna take your word for it.”

3) We still have to put on our snow gear for outside time. The snow is mostly melted, but it’s pretty wet on the playground. As I herded the last boys out this afternoon, one of the little guys said, “I’m wearing sooo much. I’m covered like a bundle man.”

I hope a bit of your day is funny today.

That 8’s not long for this world.

February 5, 2015 by Lauren 4 Comments

Sitting on sofa,
Watching a show,
Hearing a scratching,
Emme! No! No!
Little Time Bandit,
Grabbing the eight.
Look out, nine.
Your turn – just wait.

All snowmen, all the time

February 4, 2015 by Lauren 3 Comments

The schools all had another snow day. We had a quick, fierce storm come through this morning. I walked because I’m a chicken in the snow now. Walking south was no problem, but once I turned east that wind was whipping snow behind my glasses. I walked with my hand by my face and looked like I was saluting Seward.

Lloyd is in charge of updating his school’s website. I didn’t snap a photo of the front page blurb that said they were closed, and asked if they wanna build a snowman.

Wocka wocka wocka.

Some adorable mistakes

February 2, 2015 by Lauren 1 Comment

Not many children came to the CDC today, which was good. I’m glad most families decided to stay home. Most of our staff stayed home, too, and I stayed with my children until the end of the day. Around 5, I caved and turned on the tv, firing up an episode of Blue’s Clues and letting the little girls ‘paint’ my hair with dry paintbrushes. (Purple with pink stripes, if you must know.)

One of the girls looked at the letter Steve had received and said, “Dat’s him’s iPad.” She then returned her attention to my hair striping and inquired, “Did you get your ears pinched?” I said I did, but that I don’t wear earrings anymore.

Back to the hair striping, child.
