Ron Royuk is the nicest person ever.

August 29, 2012 by Lauren 9 Comments

Ever!

You know that I broke my camera, right? Well, today (Wednesday) Ron Royuk (Brad and Beth’s dad) called me at work and said, “Stop by on your way home – I have something for you.”

“You do?” I asked. “What?”

“A couple of kittens,” he deadpanned. “I hear you are the spot for taking them when they need homes.”

I am not joking when I say my heart stopped for a bit. “You’re being funny, right?”

He was. Thanks goodness! I stopped by and he gave me –

get ready for this –

a camera!!!!

Thank you, Ron! Thank you, Woot!

A camera! new in the box!

A camera! one that I didn’t have to agonize over in Best Buy!

A camera! one that fits in my pocket and can take photos at school at a moment’s notice!!

I hugged him and seriously teared up a little. It is just so, so, so nice.

So thank you, Ron Royuk, and know that you have just kicked Mother Theresa out of her spot.

😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

The best motivators

August 23, 2012 by Lauren 7 Comments

Hands down: Fear and shame.

Our friend Kris is bringing her daughter to college on Friday and is going to stop by, and since I live in a world where only one thing can be in order at a time, school has received all of my attention and the house has been a shambles.

A shambles ruled by kittens.

A shambles ruled by kittens who can make shredded tissues appear from thin air. Seriously – I clean up all the tissues, dump the trash, and two minutes later there are shredded tissues all over!

Anyway, we spent the evening making the house presentable in anticipation of Kris’ visit. I hope she’s not too weepy about leaving her daughter at Concordia, because I’m certainly not going to offer her a tissue.

Imagine this all covered with piles of junk and boxes and lots of tissues.

Validation

Remember that outdoor chair that I bought for my classroom because a little girl had barfed all over my previous comfy chair? I don’t know if I ever shared how genius the new chair is, because it has fabric that is completely waterproof and washable. I had a little boy draw on it with pen and it came right off.

Today, Tyler tested it’s barfibility, and it passed with flying colors.

Barf, barf, barf.
Lysol, Lysol, Lysol.
Good as gold.

Wrapped in Love

August 19, 2012 by Lauren 8 Comments

These kittens are going to be so much nicer than their mother. I am so thankful for friends with children who come over to properly socialize the kittens. Lloyd and I aren’t home enough to really give them the attention they need, so Macy, Bethany, Tara and Tim have been stellar.

Kittens need regular hauling about, giggling and fussing over, and wrapping up in blankets. When I was a kid I would make little beds for my cat and tuck her in like a baby.

It took some wrangling to get them into positions.

Thank you, Tara. They need this!

Can you see all five?

Do not try this at school.

August 18, 2012 by Lauren 3 Comments

I have really been trying to get my money’s worth out of my iPad at school. (Before I inevitably drop it, that is.)
* I take pictures of the children working then we do a little reviewing at the end of the morning.
* When Ethan brought in some cicada shells I pulled up a video of one molting, which was wonderfully gross.
* E-mailing a photo to a child’s parents is crazy easy.
* And outside – I balanced it on the fence so the kids could dance to some music.

I added the nail for extra security.

I admit that this is very, very, very, very, very stupid. One fall and that thing is a goner. However, I felt that it was pretty stable without the yarn, and then I added yarn, for crying out loud. It couldn’t be more less likely to fall than if I had glued it down. Right?

Right?

Lloyd said that it looks like it’s one playground ball away from an insurance claim. Silly boy, the balls have to stay in the ball area. You can’t kick a ball out of the ball area or else you’ll get excused. (And have to give Mrs. Sommerer 600 bucks for a new iPad.)

Oh, well – it made the dancers happy, and it didn’t fall.

Faces blurred for their protection.

This time.

Heavy Bag

My truck stopped working on Monday, but I just now got around to talking to someone about fixing it. Lloyd gave it a look, but seeing that it had no hard drive, he gave up.

I don’t mind walking, but there is so much junk in my bag it is ridiculous. Tonight I dumped it all out on the table and assessed it.

I have determined that it is all vitally necessary, including the many lists, lone zip tie and Baggie of emergency cat food for strays. (Otherwise known as PB bait).
