maps

All the parties.

May 19, 2013 by Lloyd 7 Comments

I almost did it. I made it to all but one of the graduation parties that I was invited to this year. Lincoln Lutheran’s last day of school was Friday and all but three of the parties were Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I think I went to 10 parties for a total of about 20 students (it’s pretty common here for multiple students to have a graduation party together). I have not officially had enough graduation cake.

This year I tried something new. One of our seniors had all of the other seniors put their party information into a Google Form (which gets shoved into a spreadsheet). Then we took that information and used a website called batchgeo that takes spreadsheets worth of data and turns it into maps.

Then the seniors could share the maps with whoever they wanted and I shared them with the other teachers.

Every party

Just Sunday's parties

The letters on the push-pins are the order of the parties, but I still had to do some work by hand to try to minimize travel time. I was mostly unsuccessful. I think there was a total of about 180 miles of parties.

schedule

They were a good class. As I shared with some of them a few weeks ago, “Just when you start to become people you leave.”

Lets hear it for cool maps!

August 1, 2012 by Lloyd 7 Comments

I’m a sucker for cool maps. If you take any sort of data and map it out by state (or better yet, by county), I’m all over that. Here’s a map that shows religious preference in the U.S. by county:

The same people have done a dozen or so other maps that break the country down by how prevalent different religious beliefs are.

It’s like spying

December 22, 2008 by Lloyd 8 Comments

For a couple of months, there’s been a little map at the bottom of the sidebar. It’s a clever little service that someone runs where they look at the IP address of visitors to the site and map them to an area on the country/world. They do it by comparing the IP address of the internet service provider you are using to a list of the locations of those providers. It’s not 100% accurate, but it’s close. The little map on the side shows the location of about the last 100 visitors, but the big map (click on the little map) shows the last 24 hours worth.

Can you find yourself on the map? When you’re on the big map it shows you what pages people in that area are reading and what kind of toilet paper they use.
