Heel Shoes and Heartbreak

November 6, 2008 by Lauren 10 Comments

I’m branching outside of my comfort zone.  I found a pair of dress shoes that actually don’t hurt very much, and I wore them to school.  It was a telling experience about how my kids feel about my old shoes that I wear every day.  The little girls were so excited! (Well, really just Betty*.)

Betty: Why are you wearing your heel shoes?
Betty (three minutes later): Where did you buy those heel shoes?
Betty (in a dreamy voice, four minutes later): I can’t wait until I grow up and can wear those heel shoes.

So, for Betty (*not her real name. Who names their kid Betty now? Lloyd came up with that one.) and all the rest of you, here are my heel shoes.

And a nice close-up of our beat-up floors.

The heartache? Well, since my voice has been shot, I’ve been using some books-on-tape with the preschoolers, and when I was leaving this afternoon I left the tape player going with a group of kids – with instructions to one of the afternoon staff to put in the next story when this one was done. She (the young college girl) said, “Yeah, I tried before and I wasn’t quite sure how you put the tape in?”

Wha??!!! Not knowing how a tape player works?? What is happening? How old am I? Young whippersnappers……

Not a go.

April 13, 2008 by Lauren 17 Comments

Earlier this week I looked around on the internet for some summer shoes. I found these cute things on Zappos.com, and they’re perfect for work. (We ask the preschoolers to wear shoes with a strap around the heel so they don’t wipe out while running around outside. If I wear flip-flops, I have to answer “Why do you get to wear those?” a hundred times a day.)

Back to your home, little shoes.

I ordered the shoes, and they came shockingly fast! Then I did some price-checking on the internet. Yes, I’m aware that I did this all out of order. My heart sank when I found the same shoes for less at Shoebuy.com. I am definitely going to send these back, but I tried a little something first. Here’s my e-mail to Shoebuy, and Rose’s reply:

Dear Shoebuy,

I don’t know what I was thinking, but I ordered a pair of Skechers
Honeymooner shoes (size 8.5) from Zappos.com last week for $56.
Foolishly, I did some price-checking after they arrived, and realize
that you sell the same shoe for $21.05 less.

I could send my shoes back to Zappos and order a new pair from you
-Zappos has free shipping both ways, as do you – but these shoes are
already here, and have done their fair share of traveling already.
Could we cut out some of the carbon footprints? Could I just have you
send a pair of shoes over to Zappos for me?

I realize that this sounds crazy, but it really makes a whole lot of
sense. I pay you for shoes, you send them to Zappos. Zappos credits my
account. No fuss, no muss. I’ll supply you with the account numbers if
this is a go.

Tongue-in-cheekly yours,
Lauren Sommerer
a future loyal Shoebuy customer.

Rose’s reply is kind, but not too funny.

Thank you for shopping with us. Unfortunately, we will not be able to
honor your request. To receive the Women’s Skechers Bikers Honeymooner
for the lower price, you will need to purchase at Shoebuy.com and return
the order purchased at Zappos should you chose to do so.

Again, thank you for choosing Shoebuy.com.

Sincerely,
Rose

*sigh* Thanks anyway, Rose.

Thanks, Beth.

February 11, 2008 by Lauren 9 Comments

One good thing that happened on Bad Haircut Day was going to Dillards to pick up some Crocs. On Beth’s tip, she told me that they had the standard style on super-sale. ($7.50, can you believe it!)

Now, I am the first to admit that Crocs are a less-than-flattering shoe. But gol dnag it if they ain’t the most comfy thing you’ll ever slide your foot into, aside from a rabbit carcass. I tried them on this morning and took the picture, and had a very hard time taking them off to put my teacher shoes on. They weigh nothing.

Unfortunately, these are too large. I was talking to Brad on the phone when I was buying them, so I wasn’t paying very close attention to how they were marked – W 10 – 11 (L) M 8 – 9. To be fair, I’m an idiot. I thought I was buying a Medium, size 8 – 9. D’oh! Who cares? I’ll never wear them in public… unless I put them on tomorrow morning…..

stupid comfortable shoes....

By the way, you should visit their website to see that you can get Crocs in much more flattering styles. I need $30.

Slow News Day

November 17, 2006 by Lauren 3 Comments

Well, the news isn’t slow, but the photo is what it is.   The Thanksgiving Breakfast Buffet was a big hit at school, Lloyd is at his Fun Night with the middle school children.  (He co-ordinates an evening of games & dancing.  I won’t go into it because he’ll probably want to write about it later.)  It’s 9:40 and he won’t be home for at least another hour.

I’ve been sitting around the house, occasionally cleaning up, and trying not to fall asleep out of supportive guilt for Lloyd.  Here’s a picture of my lap.  The shoes are my expensive, but foot-saving Josef Siebels, which I pray look better when I stand up than they do in this picture.  The uke is staged, but the harmonica isn’t.

(Who are we kidding?  It’s staged, too.)
