First World Problems

August 19, 2015 by Lloyd 3 Comments

Lauren is mad at me, because I have all of these nearly interesting things that I could write a post about, but I never remember to take a ‘before’ picture. It’s all about the before picture folks. For instance, wouldn’t this post be a lot more interesting if you could see what my boots looked like, you know, before?

I don’t remember if these boots are 3 or 4 years old, but the soles were wearing out and had become detached in the front. I didn’t know if I wanted to have them resoled as that would cost $85 to $95. They are nice boots, but they were starting to look too shabby to wear everyday (which is how I wear my boots).

Instead, I opted for just getting the toes repaired. That cost $35 at Ole’s Shoe Repair. It looks like they did a nice job, and I suppose these are my emergency backup boots now.

By using them

*WARNING: This post contains a graphic image of abused feet.* — Lauren

Ok, Lloyd. Take it away:

I have three friends who are running for state legislature and it’s getting pretty close to election day:

  • Mark Kolterman (District 24 which includes Seward)
  • Laura Ebke (District 32 just south of Seward)
  • Brent Smoyer (District 26 which contains Lincoln Lutheran)

This weekend while Lauren was busy doing stuff, I was volunteering for Laura’s campaign. We walked some of the towns in her district handing out literature and talking about all of the things that would make Laura a good state representative. I’ve known Laura for about 6 years, so it was easy to come up with good things to say about her.

Did I mention the walking? We walked a lot.  We covered Martell, Sprague, Hallam and Dewitt. There may have been one or two others. Every street in every one of those towns. I don’t wear teacher clothes when we go door to door. Shirt and Tie is just a little bit formal for knocking on doors in rural Nebraska. My normal outfit is jeans, a button down shirt and nice shoes.

I always worry that my nice shoes won’t be good for walking, so I bring my teacher shoes along too. I did that on Saturday and didn’t need them, so I didn’t bring them on Sunday. That was a mistake. After a scant mile of walking on Sunday I knew I had a blister. Ten minutes later I knew I had two of them.

There really wasn’t anything I could do. The good people of De Witt were not going to tell themselves why they should consider voting for Laura. I just kept walking. Luckily it gave me a good reason to just walk. Eric was my partner on Sunday and he was a real go getter. He figured that he could cover more houses if he ran between houses. Kids.

I didn’t take my shoes off until we were back at Laura’s house and I was back in my car. I’m glad I didn’t.

When I got to school today I told Joel, “I hurt my legs over the weekend… by using them.”

At the dance

November 14, 2011 by Lloyd 7 Comments

Is this everywhere, or just at Lincoln Lutheran? The girls get dressed up for the dance. They buy nice shoes. They wear the shoes to the dance. They get to the dance, go to the bathroom, take off the shoes and dance. (Lauren told me the shoes were all piled up in the girls’ bathroom, and she took a picture as proof.) A few hours later they put the shoes back on and go, one would like to assume, home.

Every dance at Lincoln Lutheran is like this. Well, the High School dances anyway. At the middle school dances the shoes tend to stay on, because the girls might have to beat you in dodgeball after they dance with you.

A few dances ago I wanted to see what it was like, so I took my shoes off too. It was sort of liberating.

On behalf of all the short guys at Lincoln Lutheran, thanks for not wearing some of these.
