That’s not a good title.
My shoes are always scuffed. I wear the same shoes every day, and have several pairs of the exact same kind. (I’m not gifted with a good fashion sense.) I sit criss-cross on the floor all the time at school, so scuffs on the side are easily explained – scuffs on the top of the toes confused me.
For a while I thought maybe I didn’t realize I was dragging my feet, but during one of the rare times I was actually putting my shoes back in the closet, I saw the reason.
It’s that knobbly ceiling! The solution? Fabric and liquid starch.
I’m a big fan of liquid starch. If you are some poor college student or a person who lives where your landlord won’t let you paint, you can liquid starch fabric to the wall and it can look pretty cool. Just soak the fabric until it’s pretty wet, then smooth it on, smoosh out the bubbles, let dry. The best part is peeling it off the wall when it’s time to take it down. It doesn’t harm the paint and you just have to wash the starch residue off the wall. The brown stripe in our kitchen is just a ribbon liquid-starched to the wall (because painting a stripe would require FAR more patience than I possess).
Anyway, back to the closet. I didn’t try to do a careful job smoothing it out nicely since this is purely for function. Hopefully this bit of flannel will stop the scuffs.
And hopefully I’ll put my shoes away on a regular basis.
Doubtful.

All I want to do is mock the first three comment posters, but since they are obviously spam, you may be deleting them. If you do, my mocking comment would make no sense.
But allow me to say that this is the most amazing post in the world! Shakespeare himself couldn’t even do such an excellent write-up! It has changed my life forever! I will visit your site again and again! I should pay you for the privilege of reading it!

When I make Tim’s closet into a jungle, I’m going to starch starry-night-sky type fabric to the ceiling. Because that will be cool.

Very clever. Want to do my closets, too?

I’m very impressed--now I’ll just have to think up something I want to decorate with fabric and starch!

Is bekacubed a real person? Is it possible that your remarkably outstanding site has reached the far edges of the galaxy?
(I never put my shoes away, they still get scuffed on the toes…but I do fall alot)

How about a cool border above that fabric?

My mom and I lined a trunk with starched fabric once. It was so easy, and now, 10 years later, it still great. 🙂

Good thing you didn’t discover this in February!

What a great idea Lauren! I would never have thought of doing that. I’ve got a huge stash of fabric and many boring white walls in a rented flat that must soon become more intimate with one another. I’m off to find the UK equivalent to liquid starch right now…

Of course when I say “off to find” I mean “off to the internets” 🙂
