Will & Grace’s Wedding Reception

February 16, 2016 by Lloyd 7 Comments

It was a really amazing wedding reception. It was at an amazing venue. They had a (series of) amazing bands. The food and drink was wonderful. They looked adorable together.

I told Lauren that there was just one thing that they had that I wanted. Cheese. They had the most amazing cheeses. There was so much of it, and it was so delicious. They were like cheeses I’d never had before (probably because they were cheeses that I’d never had before).

And I told Lauren another thing too. I wanted to know what those cheeses were without having to actually do anything to get the cheese information. She really came through for me. A few days later I had this list:

cheese

I haven’t actually done anything with the list yet, because every time (how come anytime is one word, but every time isn’t?)I was somewhere with cheeses, the list of cheeses was on the refrigerator. But someday soon, those cheeses will be mine. Oh, yes, they will be mine. Please note that cheese mails particularly well this time of year.

Hard Rolls

March 3, 2015 by Lloyd 4 Comments

I stop by Super Savers about once a week to pick up hard rolls. Lauren likes it when I do, because they are her favorite food. Well, one of her favorite foods. Well, I think her exact words were, “Food I don’t have to cook.”

We put butter on them and make open-faced sandwiches. They are amazing, because the bread is amazing. Hard, crispy crust and soft, fluffy inside. It’s a lot like the bread my grandma used to make, but even better, because of the greater crust to bread ratio.

bread1

Side note: As I typed that last bit I remembered that my grandma used to always say, “Eat the crust, because it makes you pretty.” I was about to write that she said that to all of her grandkids, but now that I think about it, I think she said that to all of the boys, and she would tell the girls, “Eat the crust, because it makes you handsome.” Grandma liked to mess with us. Don’t even get me started about giving us a knife and making us go out and cut our own switch when we’d been bad.

Anyway, where I was going with this was that for the past month or so, the hard rolls have been in a plastic bag that makes them not crispy. This is a real downer. Lauren knows some sort of sympathetic magic that makes them become crispy again, but she refuses to teach it to me, because she’s afraid that I will leave her once I know all of her eldritch ways.

Anyway, I was looking around at the bakery section of Super Saver yesterday to see if they had any “having not sat around in a plastic bag” hard rolls. The store director happened to be in the area and he noticed me looking for something and I said I was looking for hard rolls. He pointed me to the bags and I asked if they still sold them without the bags.

He immediately knew why I was asking and talked for some length about how they had tracked the time of day when they sold hard rolls for some time and they had decided that the best time to take the remaining hard rolls and make them inedible put them in plastic bags was at 3:00pm.

Then he handed me his card and said, “But call this number, ask for Tina and tell her to set some aside for you.”

My First Rib Fest

August 9, 2013 by Lloyd 5 Comments

While Lauren has been busy with home visits, I’ve been spending every waking hour at School getting computer things working and putting 3 classrooms in order. Well, that’s not entirely true. I’ve actually been spending a fair amount of time each day eating too.

At the start of the busy season, Lauren and I stocked up on things we could just heat up and eat. But I haven’t eaten many of mine. It’s been one, “Lets go out to eat!” after another amongst Lincoln Lutheran faculty. My latest conquest: RibFest. I don’t know how I’ve been in (well, near) Lincoln for 18 years without going to a RibFest. We went for lunch, because there is no cover charge until evening.

We ate under this thing. There were a lot of them.

They have people who cook ribs come and cook ribs and other people come and eat the ribs. It’s a very simple concept. Samith invited me to go with him and Joel invited me to go with him, so I went with both of them. It was like on that one sitcom where the main character is on a date with two people at the same time and almost, but not quite manages to pull it off.

I almost pulled it off, but they were sitting on either side of me. In fact, they got the ribs from the places on either side of me too. I went to The Texas Rib Ranch’s stand. Samith went left to some place from Kentucky and Joel went to the right to some outfit from Australia.

The line that Samith was in.

I was happily eating some of the best ribs I had ever tasted, until I tried Samith’s, actually Ian’s, Samith’s son’s*, ribs. They were better than mine. Then I tried Joel’s. They were even better. It turned out I had the worst ribs at RibFest. Well, maybe not, there were a half dozen other rib places.

Still, I felt robbed. No, I felt full. I thought about ordering a whole rack, but the half rack was enough for me. I highly recommend RibFest. It was Festive and there were Ribs.

This is where I got my ribs.

*Not entirely sure if that is punctuated correctly.

I have been doing this wrong for, um, a while.

Note to self: when we make fajitas, that is to say, when Lauren makes fajitas, remember to put the sour cream on first, so that you don’t just end up with two big globs of sour cream on yours.

Fancy Olives

I don’t really remember when I had my first fajita. I would say it was in college.

Final Fajita

Also note: you might be better off just throwing another tortilla on top and calling it a sandwich.

I Heart Chinese Food

March 14, 2012 by Lloyd 5 Comments

So, when I got home today, Lauren called and said that she (and by that she meant we) needed to make a quick trip to Wal*Mart. I knew how long those take, so I grabbed a gift certificate to Dragon Palace (best Chinese food within 25 miles) and met her at the car.

Our trip to Wal*Mart went more-or-less as planned, except that I whipped out my trusty phone in the middle of the produce aisle and phoned in a take-out order. Lauren was driving, and there was no parking so she dropped me off out front and circled the block (here, I’m just guessing).

Walking into Dragon Palace right in front of me was a gang of 3 high school boys. Once they got into the restaurant they met a 4th high school boy who greeted them, one after the other, with a big hug. When he got to the last one, I said, “uhum?”

And I got a big hug too.

Also, the Chinese food was delicious.

SuperSnacker & Me

January 26, 2010 by Lauren 9 Comments

So, that snack-making thingie is turning out to be pretty cool. I’m certain I’ve received more that $3 worth of joy from it, and it also satisfies my desire to have a GT Xpress. (I tell you, I am a sucker for infomercials. I will watch that one every time it comes on. That and the Magic Bullet blender. I can’t break the spell.) This thing is better than the GT, though, and it’s built like a tank! Here’s a list of things I’ve tried:

So far, I’ve made cake, but I didn’t eat any. (It was after 7 p.m., and I can’t eat then.) I had to try it making it, though. Success!

Jiffy's devil's food, which means it's dry.

The pizza sandwiches are the hands-down best. Served with a side of warm sauce, it’s pizza in five minutes! Success!

Cast & crew

Hot pockets. Do you know Jim Gaffigan? He's hilarious.

Eggs were the most fun to eat. Success! (See above.) The one food item I’ll have to tinker with is the 5-minute-a-day bread dough. It made satisfactory dipping bread for stew, but not bread that I’d want to eat on it’s own. (Too dense.) Semi-Fail

So-so, but I'll eat anything.

I feel so futuristic eating my food in triangle form. What’s next – a hovercraft?
