Less is more

November 16, 2011 by Lloyd 6 Comments

You might remember a few months ago that I sort of dropped my iPhone a little. I wasn’t worried, because I had purchased insurance for it. But I wasn’t in any hurry to be without it for a couple of weeks and the deductable was $50.00, so I just lived with it.

poor little iPhone4

I really wanted to get a wooden back. Lauren even thought it would be cool, so I looked for a place that I could order one. Unfortunately, the one place I found a nice walnut back didn’t ship to our zip-code (I know, what’s up with that?).

I did find a nice one for $16.38. It took all of three days to make it to our zip-code. It came with instructions and a screwdriver. It was easy to take the back off, and I looked around a bit.

Mostly battery and screen

But what is that stuff around the camera?

hair today, gone tomorrow

This calls for a closer look. Note: this is the first time that I have been glad that Lauren likes to have a microscope around the house.

not what I expected

There were lots of little hairs, and they were only present around the camera assembly. I wondered for a bit if they were Steve Jobs’ hairs that were put into iPhones so that he could one day be cloned, but decided they were not quite the right color.

So I got out a little brush and a tweezer and began the removal process.

there were more than I expected

Once the hair was removed, it was quite easy to put the new back on.

it makes me feel rich

Tomorrow I’ll be convincing 7th graders that I’m testing a prototype for the new iPhone5 for Apple.

Crazy Hair

March 13, 2009 by Lauren 7 Comments

So, I’m sitting at the computer staring blankly, and said, “I don’t know what to post about today.” Lloyd looked at my head and said, “Hello?”

Oh, yeah.

We had Crazy Hair Day at school. The preschoolers are wrapping up a study of hair, and today was our final hazzah. I had planned on lots of braids, but laziness won out this morning and I pulled out an old set of hot rollers. As I wrapped my hair Lloyd asked, “How long have you have those? I’ve never seen them.” I’ve actually had them for years, because deep in my heart I want to have naturally curly hair. I used to curl my hair at night and think, “I could totally pull this off tomorrow,” and always chickened out. Today was the first time I’ve left the house with curly hair – well, except for my wedding.

I had my hair curled at noon for our 7 p.m. wedding and it was dead by 3. My sister came to my apartment and we tried to fix it with an array of curling devices and tons of hairspray. I lived right behind the church and walked over there with curlers still in my hair. I had to protect my dignity, though, so I walked to the church with a box on my head.

box

Yeah. Dignity.

Behold – “The Grape”

August 19, 2008 by Lauren 18 Comments

There’s a big ol’ purple van sitting in our driveway tonight.  No, we didn’t win the lottery – Lloyd is going to be the school shuttle driver on Wednesdays.  It’s very exciting.

Full of grape-y goodness and students.

I hope the kids will recognize him.  He’s shaved down from the full beard to just a goatee.  I like it, but it makes drawing him a little more complicated.  The all-around face scribble has to be broken up into parts.

I should have given him a more chiseled jaw.

Have you tried drawing Lloyd today? It’s as easy as pie – give it a shot!  Use a black marker, because that boy’s got a lot of hair.

Fish out of mineral water

June 15, 2008 by Lauren 15 Comments

Lloyd went to a surplus auction on Saturday, so I went along to run a few errands and try to get my bad haircut fixed. My plan was to NOT go to a Great Clips or Cost Cutters, but an actual place that does hair. The first place I tried was booked until late afternoon, so that was a no go. I drove around thinking that I needed to find a nice place, but in an out-of-the way location. I happened upon this little village-type shopping center where the clothing places had words like ‘upscale’ and ‘shoppe’ and ‘way-too-expensive-for-you’. Luckily, there was a hair place.

I take that back – it was a ‘Day Spa and Salon‘. I had a bad feeling walking up to the doors, and a worse feeling passing through them. It was obviously not a place for me. There I was in my t-shirt and capris – selected for their ability to get sweaty and dirty hauling auction stuff – and there were the ladies, all dolled up. I’ve never seen so much makeup, cleavage and highlights in one place. I stupidly asked, “Can I get a haircut?” There was a pause, then one girl said, “I could do it now….. if you don’t need it styled.” Ha! Not a problem.

She turned out to be very nice – a leader of her church’s youth group and an alto in their choir – and the whole time I was laughing inside and thinking, “Why didn’t I bring my camera??” I didn’t even let her blow dry it, which shocked her to the core. I explained that I was just going to be all sweaty and gross in an hour at the auction. I bet they wished I had snuck out the back door. I was bad advertising.

Just like that.

Oh, brother.

May 6, 2008 by Lauren 15 Comments

Here’s my new haircut.

*Sigh*

I have no one to blame but myself. I have no established relationship with a reliable hairstylist – I just go to the places that take walk-ins. I gave no good directions except, “Make it shorter”. She commenced cutting.

My first tip should have been how she turned my chair away from the mirror. No, wait! My first tip should have been her own unnaturally-black-as-night hair with a yellowy-white stripe running down the center. I foolishly trusted that it would all come out fine. When it was over, I looked in the mirror, and there was a definite difference in the level of hair in front and the level in back. I asked her to fix it a little, then stopped her when I just kept losing hair.

I came home to wet it down and mess with it. I thought ‘If I can keep the front pushed back it’s not so bad”, until I realized….. I have a mullet.

Yard Work

May 4, 2008 by Lauren 20 Comments

Happy Birthday, Philip!  (my brother 🙂 )

This post is for Brad and our parents: We hope you’re proud of us, because we actually did yard work this afternoon! Yes, we went outside – where they keep all the fresh air and sunshine – and Lloyd mowed while I dug dead leaves out of the bushes. Whew! We’re actually in the market for a new mower, since I don’t trust how this one’s wheel keeps falling off. It looks like we’ll be buying a Toro from a dealer here in Seward. Look for it in next week’s posts!

Why is it pronounced ‘moe’ and not ‘mao’?

Lloyd wants me to show you his haircut. He told Bob the Barber how much longer than the sides he wanted it on top (about an inch and half), but Bob just made the top an inch and a half long. Period. Nobody tells Bob how to cut hair.

Just for Brad.
