I had the weirdest, most amazing thing happen this afternoon. I was working on stuff in the basement at school, ran upstairs to grab an apple, took a bite of it when I was going back downstairs, and suddenly the wire behind my teeth was poking my tongue.
“Oh, no. I am Uncomfortable.”
I didn’t know what to do. I don’t like being Uncomfortable. My whole life is spent being paranoid to avoid being Uncomfortable. I’m afraid of having a crash driving in winter weather not because I’m afraid to die – I’m afraid of being Uncomfortable.
It was 4:40. I called the dentist and tried to act calm and non-crazy, “Um, yeah, I just broke a little bit of cement off my retaining wire and I was wondering if someone could do something about it….. today?” Theresa (the mom of a past preschooler) said, “Can you come right now? ……Hello? Hello? Is there anyone there? Oh, you’re here.”
No joke. The dentist is three blocks away. I dropped everything, didn’t tell anyone where I was going, and zoomed right over. Amy, the other receptionist and also the mother of a past preschooler, laughed when I came in. “We saw you take that corner. Nice two-wheel turn.” I explained to them that I was Uncomfortable. (Though I said ‘Uncomthauhl’ so I wouldn’t scratch my tongue.)
I was in and out of there in less than ten minutes. Wire filed down, new cement applied and dried with a special little UV light- it was amazing! I love the dentist! (But not enough to go for regular cleanings. That’s just crazy.)
