I’m sorry to constantly be posting about infestations, but the bugs are coming out in full force. Some tiny ants were coming in the back door to get at the cat food, so I tried to put some Terro in their path. The bottle was old and its contents were too crystalized, so I just threw the bottle outside and let them gorge themselves on poison. Ready for grossness?
In other ant news, I went to throw some stuff on the other side of the compost pile, which I noticed looked pretty nice and loamy, and when I dug into it to bury the scraps it practically sparkled with life. Um, except the sparkles were hundreds of ants crawling out of their composty home!!! Jibblie Jilbblie Jibblie. I would have taken a photo but I feared for my camera.

Um, I think I won’t be able to visit this summer. It has nothing to do with all the bugs at your house, it’s just that I.. uh… have to wash my hair. Yes, that’s it. I have to wash my hair.
Lloyd says
That Terro stuff really is great. I used it at school this spring. We have a colony of ants that live under one wing of the school and every so often they come up through the cracks and steal a 6th grader.
Karla says
And that’s bad why?
Deanne says
heh, heh..
Deanne says
I was trying to laugh at Karla’s “it’s bad why” comment. But it didn’t go in the right spot.

Ants, I hate ants! (On the flip side I love Aunts.) Anyway, we had these BIG carpenter ants last summer/fall and found out they had invaded one of our oak trees and were making a nightly migration into our house. From there they found lots of fun places to go. They were coming in by our fireplace and would boldly march across our living room going where no ant had gone before. Let me tell you -- no ants boldly go here now. I love my Rottler pest guy, but not quite as much as my Aunts. 🙂
Karla says
We had them come in every year from the tree in the back yard. Then I started making them drinks -- little ant screwdrivers. I’d put out small puddles of orange juice and squirt a bunch of Terro in it. It worked like a charm! 🙂

The word infestations reminds of a song we sang as kids. Do you all know this song?
Don’t ever laugh when a hearse go by,
Or you may be the next to die,
They wrap you up in a dirty old sheet,
Then they bury you six feet deep.
You’re doing ok for about a week,
Then your coffin begins to leak,
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
The ants play pinnacle on your snout,
Your stomach turns a slimey green,
Pus comes out like whipping cream,
You spread it on a piece of bread,
And that’s what you eat when you’re dead.

I think we led a slightly healthier childhood.
Peggy says
hehe…I’m so sorry your childhood was deprived of such a classic…but surely you sang ‘Great Green Gobs’ as a child, right?

I never knew all the words, though, Peggy -- thanks for that little stroll down memory lane! How are you with lyrics for the Inkspots and the Mills Brothers now? “You’ll never miss the water till the well runs dry” or “Java Jive” or… [“What’s that got to do with ants?”]
--she whose backyard shed is being eaten slowly over the years by carpenter ants…..icky!
Lauren says
Ahem.
I love coffee, I love tea.
I love the java jive and it loves me.
Coffee and tea and my java and me --
a cup a cup a cup a cup a cup!
I love java -- sweet and hot.
Whoops! Mr. Moto I’m a coffee pot.
Shoot me the pot and I’ll pour me a spot
a cup a cup a cup a cup a cup.
Thank you, Manhattan Transfer! I haven’t thought of that song since my college days -- long before I liked coffee. It’s funny to hear it now!
Jill says
We sang Java Jive for a jazz concert in high school! Thanks for the memories, Lauren and Carol!

I was always fond of the birthday dirge.
Happy Birthday. (uh)
Happy Birthday. (uh)
Misery and despair
People dying everywhere, so
Happy Birthday. (uh)
Happy Birthday. (uh)
You’re one year closer to death.
It gets less funny the older I get.

I’m with Karla. The ants will be back unless you take care of the big nest. We finally found ours last year after fighting them all spring. I’ve seen Terro a lot of places this year. Couldn’t find it last year.
Lloyd says
That’s the beauty of Terro, they take it back to their queen, she eats it and dies. They do eventually come back, but it takes 2-3 months. Then we put out a few more drops of Terro and they are gone in a day or two.
Ant says
Hello!
Nice illustration. Is there a bigger shot of it? I feel like that Lady(b(ug/ird)/ Beetle) with pesty outdoor Argentine ants crawling and biting me in my nest.
Thank you in advance. 🙂
