(The above banner has nothing to do with this story.)
Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I am kicking myself for not doing like our local elementary school did – they celebrated on Friday. Genius! Get the craziness out of the way and then Monday can be ‘normal’. I’ll have to remember that in future years.
Anyway, my traditional snack for the day is some kind of baked good that we can embellish as needed (unfrosted cupcakes with frosting and sprinkles to add). My latest good idea came a couple of years ago when instead of sherbet floats (the ‘fancy drink’) we started having Pink Milk. Not strawberry milk – just a couple of drops of food coloring in the cup, add some milk and voila’ – gasps of astonishment! Add a straw and it’s a party!
I can’t do baked goods this year because one of my girls is gluten intolerant and I want to go a different route. I am envisioning a pink finger jello with red and purple hearts suspended inside. Tonight was experiment night. I had strawberry jello already mixed up, but the only other jello I had to mix was also strawberry. “No problem!” I thought, “I’ll just add a little milk to pink it up.”
Um. Something went wrong. Stir stir stir…..
bleh.
Lloyd walked by to steal some scraps of the already-prepared Jello and declared, “I freakin’ love the smell of Jello!”
“Would you eat this?” I asked, pointing to the mixure (which resembles this).
“Sure!”
“That is curdled milk,” I educated him.
He gagged a little, and rightfully so.
Back to the Jello drawing board. I need to go to the store.

The first picture caption confuses me… You used the timer to add milk?
And I know that at church dinners I’ve seen milky-looking Jello in some sort of layer arrangement. How did they do that if not with milk?
Lauren says
I used the timer function on the camera, which for some reason I can’t think of it’s real name. Self-timer?
The other jello salads use condensed milk, which I believe is of the devil. They also probably followed a time-tested recipe, instead of just messing around. 🙂
Beth says
Nancy Held knows how to do milky-looking jello. You can call her and ask.
Did you use hot milk?
Beth says
Oh, oh, oh!!! I just remembered!!! It’s whipped cream! There’s a recipe on the side of the jello box for jello mousse.
But that might be the wrong consistency…
Karla says
You could use either cool whip or dream whip.
Lauren's dad says
Would tinted, sweetened whipped cream cheese work?
Peggy says
Dang. My comment disappeared. Now I forgot what I said. Oh yea…Is curdled milk a bad thing? Isn’t cheesed curdled milk?
I can’t wait to see the finished product. But if you run out of time, maybe you could just get a big ‘ol tub of this:

PS--Lauren, you look like a model in that banner shot…not kidding!
And I meant ‘cheese’ in my above comment.
Lauren says
I believe that my reflection might, indeed, have a career as a model, but I haven’t seen a dime of that money. (I was holding a ukulele and had hoped it woud show up more.)
Kitt says
Funny. ‘Tis the season for Jell-O.
Lauren says
I saw your post but I can’t make a reply. Your jello was BE-A-U-TI-FUL!!!
Lloyd says
Yeah, that was really impressive.
Kitt says
Thanks! I tweaked my settings (had to turn on comment moderation). I think it should work for you now.
