Lloyd, Sam and Jarod are at St. John tonight pulling some more cable while I? I am not. I helped last Saturday and apparently they are re-doing what we did then. I’m staying out of it this time.
We had a funny moment on Saturday. Lloyd and Jarod are both computer super-geeks, Sam is pretty techy and me like screen with pretty lights. Sam was telling me that watching Lloyd and Jarod think through a problem was like watching a poker game. One would say a thought, then much time would pass (while their robot brains ‘whrrrr‘d through the data, analyzing every aspect of it), then another would say something, then much time would pass (whrrr). I shared with them that back in our early marriage, I taught Lloyd some valuable human skills, such as, “When a mere mortal asks you a question, you can’t just quietly think about it – it looks like you’re blowing them off. You need to use a ‘thinking sound’, like ‘hmmmmmmm’.”
Jarod ‘whrrr‘d for a minute and then said, “That’s actually useful information. You could run a finishing school for nerds.” I just about busted a gut!
Other lessons I could teach:
Stop Using Acronyms Around Regular People.
Girls Are Not As Frightening As They Appear.
Don’t Slouch. (basic course)
Move Around. Your Blood Is Pooling In Your Butt. (advanced course)
Off to work on the syllabus!

Might I also suggest “Fashion 101: wear dark socks with dress shoes/suits and white socks with athletic shoes.” (When I was in grad school it always seemed that a certain segment of the population did the exact opposite.) I can’t really suggest course material beyond that but it’s a start.

I am part of that crowd with the exception that I simply don’t own white socks. None. Nor do I own straight black socks. I am a big fan of the multicolored dress socks from Gap. I wear them all day. When I was coaching tennis or basketball, the team would ask me if I was going to change my socks? Nope, can’t. This is all I got. Then I would proceed to whip the snot out of them on the court. Life is good in dress socks.

This does not seem to be true anymore. Most of the kids of today (sell, the boys anyway) seem to be wearing dark socks with their shorts now. My dad was in sock fashion when we went on a float trip this summer for the first time in about 50 year.

I guess I’m out of touch with American fashion. Everyone around here wears lederhosen with some really crazy short legwarmer things and no socks.

I agree that the boys and girls are wearing black sports socks with shorts and sports shoes. Our Grandpas knew best!
And I like your finishing school idea.
Peggy says
Haha! I love your school! May I be the 1st to enroll?
And I so agree with you about the acronyms. My army son is forever using them. I just start talking back to him in nonsense acronyms to help him get the point. “Before we go OTD, I need to CMS. And remember not to YAMFDS tonight. ONO.”
Lets see….do I have anything to add to the syllabus? Hmmmm (whrrrrr…)… nope, guess not.

I used to say that I needed a light on my forehead that said “Processing”.
Kristi says
Do they still use pocket-protectors?
CousinSam says
This is a 501 level class. Prerequisites: At least one person agrees you could use it, and…

Whr, I have to process all those comments!
